Pattinson stars in the dark comedy as a quirky twenty-something musician on the verge of a quarter-life crises. We know this because in the clip, he looks into

the mirror and gives himself a pep talk: "You're not a nobody, you're a sombody." He then gives his reflection a playful little punch. Hey, wait a second -- vampires aren't supposed to have reflections! Oh right. We forgot. This movie was actually made *before* Pattinson became bloodsucker Edward Cullen. Watch the trailer now.

"How to Be" director Oliver Irving says he searched for a lead actor for over a year, and knew instantly that Pattinson was "the one" when he showed up at a

casting. "Rob was thinking of giving up acting but wanted to try out an indie film where he could get into a character," Irving told Teen Vogue.

Kristen Stewart gives her trademark sideways smile on the third Twilight cover of Entertainment Weekly.

The 18-year-old actress sat down with EW.com for a candid interview with the magazine to talk about the upcoming vampire film. ”I just want to make sure Twilight’s worth the ginormous attention it receives. Everyone said this is a big-deal movie. But I hate when people celebrate before you have something to celebrate about,” Kristen said.

She also reveals that there is only one man in the world who could play the Edward to her Bella. “Catherine [Hardwicke] liked a couple of the guys [who auditioned], and I was like, ‘Are you joking? I can’t do the movie unless Rob [Pattinson] does it.”’

SANTA MONICA, California — Last week, the MTV Movies Blog whipped movie lovers into a frenzy with the announcement that fans were being recruited for a top-secret television show taping. Now, all can finally be revealed.
For once, fans of such upcoming films as "Twilight" and "Watchmen" will find themselves embracing "Spoilers" rather than running away from them — as that's the name of MTV's newest program, a quarterly movie special that will deliver first looks at the year's biggest upcoming flicks, including behind-the-scenes action and exclusive scenes.
As loyal followers of MTV's "Twilight" Tuesday well know, the series kicks off with a premiere episode being taped later this week. That "Spoilers" episode, featuring such stars from the highly anticipated flick as Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and director Catherine Hardwicke, will air on November 14 at 7:30 p.m.
Hundreds of the most die-hard "Twilight" fans in the world will attend MTV News' screening of the film, with the stars walking the blood-red carpet to chat with MTV's own Tim Kash. In addition to "Twilight," the first installment will also give viewers exclusive access to scenes from such upcoming blockbusters as "Watchmen," "Bride Wars," "Bedtime Stories" and more.
So set your DVRs, TiVos and VCRs (and seriously, if you're still relying on a VCR, why?) to record "Spoilers" on November 14.

(Nov. 7) - 'Twilight,' the first of four novels in Stephenie Meyer's world, tells the story of 17-year-old Bella who moves from Arizona to Washington to live with her father, only to fall in love.
Her object of affection, however, turns out to be a vampire named Edward.
Meyer's books are a hit world wide, selling over 17 million copies of the series, so it was a certainty that at least the first would be turned into a feature film.
Anticipating what may be a huge hit, the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly features three covers of 'Twilight' stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart -- one of them together and one solo cover each.
The stars of the movie -- out in theaters on Nov. 21 -- sat down with the magazine to discuss their part in the Vampire-craze. Highlights Below

The good news is that we're only a few weeks away from the November 21 release of "Twilight" — the bad news, folks, is that also means there are only a handful of "Twilight" Tuesdays left.
And since the greatest fireworks shows always end with a big bang, this week is a good one. First off, be sure to head over to the Movies Blog for a major announcement about how you can join Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Catherine Hardwicke at an exclusive MTV "Twilight" event. Then, take a look below for our final installment in the "Twilight" Stars Answer Fans' Burning Questions series.
During the past year, some of our most popular "Twilight" Tuesdays have featured parts one, two and three in the series, as we brought the questions you submitted straight to the stars.
Now, for the final time (well, before the sequels, anyway), read on to learn about RPattz's desire to join the Wu-Tang Clan, Ashley's desire to kick Barbie's butt and the shocking truth about which castmember runs like a mountain goat.
Q: "If 'Twilight' is a hit, what would be the coolest thing about being in a blockbuster?" - Puppy Love
Ashley Greene (Alice Cullen): I want an action figure. An action figure would be really, really cool.
MTV: Are there any plans? Have you heard anything?
Greene: There's been talk. Hopefully, [the film will] do well enough that all that stuff can come out, and they'll have posters and action figures and everything. [To Jackson] Would you want an action figure?
Jackson Rathbone (Jasper Hale): Sure, why not?
MTV: What would you do with your action figure once you got it?
Greene: I would put it up on a pedestal, with stuff around it. The funny thing is if they came out with an action figure — they did such a good job at making us look the part — that my action figure wouldn't even really look like me as a person. But it would be cool to have it, as a character.
MTV: You could have her hang out with Barbie.
Greene: No, it would kick Barbie's butt. It would not be like Barbie.
Q: "What can you tell us about Robert's music?" - Alice
Kellan Lutz (Emmett Cullen): Actually, we would go out a lot in Oregon when we were shooting. There was a little karaoke place, a bar next to the hotel where we were staying at. We would go there every Thursday, and he would just play and rock out. He is an amazing artist.
MTV: Robert has two songs on the soundtrack. Could you tell us anything about the lyrics?
Lutz: No, I could not! Because that is his passion, that is his baby. He told me, he was like, "Do not!" He would come to our house and he would play for some of our friends, and when we were all hanging out he said [in a bad RPattz voice]: "Do not repeat these!" That was a terrible Rob impersonation, by the way.
Q: "There's a lot of stunt work. Who is the worst at it?" - Wolf23
Nikki Reed (Rosalie Hale): I could tell you immediately, but I don't know if that's, like, the nicest thing to say.
Lutz: What?
Reed: He's asking, "Who would you say is the least athletic?" We'll have the same answer.
Lutz: Let's hear yours — go ahead.
Reed: No, let's say, "One, two, three," and then say it.
Reed: One, two, three ...
Lutz and Reed: Rob.
Lutz: Yes! Awesome.
Reed: Rob is the least athletic person.
Lutz: But he runs cute! His running is cute — and I rarely ever say "cute" as a word.
Reed: He runs like a mountain goat.
Lutz: They'll tell me, Emmett, to run in front of him to block him out, so he looks cool.
Q: "Team Edward, Team Jacob or Team Switzerland?" - Andreanna
Taylor Lautner (Jacob Black): Um ... Team Switzerland?
MTV: Do you know what that question means? Could you explain it? [Editor's note: This question was asked before Lautner began shooting the film, many months ago.]
Lautner: I don't. [Laughs.]
MTV: Well, the fans divide themselves into whether they think Bella should go with Edward, Jacob or Switzerland — which means in between, since Switzerland is a neutral country.
Lautner: OK, gotcha. That makes more sense Considering that I'm Jacob, I definitely would have to say Team Jacob all the way.
MTV: I love that you heard the Team Jacob option and still went with Switzerland, even though you're Jacob.
Lautner: Exactly. [Laughs.] I just thought it sounded interesting.
Q: "Cam, do you and Robert stay in character and hate each other between takes?" - Yasmine
Cam Gigandet (James): Very much. [Laughs.] No, not at all. No, definitely not.
MTV: What would you guys talk about between takes, before you had to turn it on again and start slamming each other in the face?
Gigandet: We would spend a lot of our time talking about our work and the scene and any ideas we had — that was how we spent most of the in-between time at work. If we went to dinner or anything, it would be about our lives, I guess. What do friends talk about?
Q: "Kristen, is there a Bella moment that reminds you of yourself in real life?" - Ken
Kristen Stewart (Bella Swan): I think going into high school for the first day. The line "suffer-in-silence type" — some people get the wrong idea if you're quiet and you're just not the most gregarious person. [They think] that you're self-involved, rude, possibly, sometimes frigid. I get that a lot from people that don't know me, like online. All you guys think that I don't smile ever. It's not true. I do smile sometimes. But walking into high school, for sure, is overwhelming. I'm not the type of person to just stroll in and be like, "Hey, everybody! How are ya?" So, I could relate to that.
Q: "If you could play any other "Twilight" character, who would it be and why? - Amal
Christian Serratos (Angela Weber): Oh, jeez, that's such a hard question. I'd probably do one of the bad vampires — not necessarily in "Twilight," but in the entire series. Maybe even James or Victoria. [I'd want to] play kind of another character, kind of a badass.
Q: "Rob, do you like Arctic Monkeys?" - Jen Elias
Robert Pattinson (Edward Cullen): Yeah, I do kind of like them, actually. Not that much, but I like some of their songs.
MTV: What's your favorite song by them?
Pattinson: I don't know them that well ... probably their first one. What was their first song called? [Editor's note: We think Rob is referring to "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor."] I've completely forgotten what it's called. They're all right.
MTV: Who is your favorite band?
Pattinson: At the moment, I've really gotten into hip-hop again recently. I'm reliving my childhood. I've been listening to a lot of Wu-Tang Clan. I always wanted to be a rapper when I was younger. That's always what I wanted to be before I started acting — that's what I wanted to do, was be a rapper. I didn't have the right physicality about it — I'm not very threatening.

You’ve spent the past year keeping a close eye on MTV and our “Twilight” Tuesday series, eager for the very latest in news about Stephenie Meyer’s underground vampire franchise. Now, just weeks before “Twilight” hits theaters (and as we publish our final ” ‘Twilight’ Stars Answer Fans’ Burning Questions,”) the phenomenon is finally breaking through to the mainstream – and MTV is eager to celebrate with our Twilighter friends.
MTV News will be holding a very special “Twilight” event in Los Angeles on November 7th, as we tape a television special celebrating the much-anticipated movie। “Twilight” stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and director Catherine Hardwicke will be in attendance to address the crowd, and they’ll premiere never-before-seen footage from the movie some two weeks before it hits theaters. Hardwicke will also take questions from attendees during a Q & A session.

Stay tuned for details about when the show will air on MTV, but before you begin abusing the “O”, “M” and “E” buttons on your keyboard, you’ll want to know this: MTV would like to thank you by filling our audience with the real, hardcore fans who’ve been following our “Twilight” coverage so loyally over all these months.

Kellan Lutz and Ashley Greene, who will portray siblings Emmett and Alice Cullen in the much-anticipated "Twilight" movie due in theatres next month, have agreed to meet fans and appear at TwiCon - expected to be the largest of the fan conventions dedicated to the Stephenie Meyer books. More than 2,500 devotees of the Twilight series are expected to descend on Dallas July 30-Aug. 2, 2009, to celebrate their devotion to the vampire romance series.
Dallas, TX (PRWEB) October 27, 2008 -- Fans of the fictional Cullen family of the Twilight series of books will have a chance to meet two of their movie equivalents at the TwiCon 2009 fan convention.
Kellan Lutz and Ashley Greene, who will portray siblings Emmett and Alice Cullen in the much-anticipated "Twilight" movie due in theatres next month, have agreed to meet fans and appear at TwiCon - expected to be the largest of the fan conventions dedicated to the Stephenie Meyer books. The news was announced during a BlogTV broadcast by Twilight Vlog and YouTube personality Bailey (NoMoreMarbles) this evening from the Sheraton Dallas Hotel and Convention Center, the host site of TwiCon 2009.
More than 2,500 devotees of the Twilight series are expected to descend on Dallas July 30-Aug. 2, 2009, to celebrate their devotion to the vampire romance series. Organizers of TwiCon 2009 previously announced that Mike Welch (starring as Mike Newton in the Summit Entertainment film); series expert Bailey (NoMoreMarbles); band Bella Cullen Project; Kaleb the Twilight Guy; and parody group The Evil Igaunas will appear as special guests at the fan fest.
"Adding Kellan and Ashley to the bill further solidifies TwiCon 2009's position as THE fan event to attend next year," said Becky Scoggins, managing partner of the TwiCon event. "We are excited about the opportunity to bring the books and movie to life for fans and expect to announce more special guests in the coming weeks."
TwiCon 2009 is the premiere unofficial conference celebrating Stephenie Meyer and the Twilight saga. The event is expected to feature a Twilight movie screening, live Twilight inspired band performances, a Volturi Masque Ball, opportunities to meet Twilight cast, dozens of breakout sessions, panels, workshops and more, as well as a Vendor Hall where dozens of vendors will offer items and collectibles inspired by the Twilight books and movie. The event also will feature an Artists' Alley fan exhibition of handmade art and goods.
TwiCon organizers will actively be promoting the summer conference during the "Twilight" premiere weekend Nov. 15-18. Vlogger Bailey and others will share the red carpet with the cast and crew at the Hollywood premiere; and will be panelists at a special Twilight Live podcast -- hosted by TwiCon partner Becka and featuring a live audience and a slew of special guests, including Peter Facinelli, Jackson Rathbone, Mike Welch, Kaleb and MTV personality Larry Carroll -- at the Borders bookstore in Westwood.
All-inclusive tickets for the convention are $255 and available at http://www.twicon.org/. Tickets have been selling briskly and organizers expect all 2,500 tickets to be snapped up quickly, Scoggins said.

You may remember pretty boy Peter Facinelli from his stint on Fox's short-lived speedfest "Fast Lane." But more likely you've seen him deliver incisive, slightly-under-the-radar turns on quirky TV fare like "Six Feet Under" and "Damages."
Here, the Queens native offers Premiere.com the inside scoop on Twilight's veggie vampires, that unforgettable baseball scene, his wife Jennie Garth's Twilighter status and why he almost turned down the role of Dr. Carlisle Cullen in the first place.
So how did you end up as Carlisle Cullen, the leader of Twilight's vegetarian vampire clan?I got a call from my agent saying there's a vampire movie that Catherine Hardwicke's directing. And the first thing out of my mouth [was], "I don't want to do a vampire movie."
What do you have against vampires?I just thought they were silly, you know? All the ones that I'd seen are all blood and guts and gore — more like zombie films than the mystical tale of the vampire, which is where it originated. So I thought it would be like that, because there was a time, right after Interview with the Vampire, where they were making a ton of vampire movies and I'd get like these really god-awful scripts. And so I had that taste in my mouth that vampire movies were just these Dawn of the Dead zombie types [of movies].
So you were about to write it off?Yeah, completely. But I liked Catherine Hardwicke's work, so it was interesting enough for me to say, "Okay, I'll read the book." Because we didn't even have a script at that point. So I read the book in a day. It was such a great read and I was so excited by it, because it was kind of a throwback to the original vampire tales with their sexual metaphors about the bloodthirsty but beautiful creatures. The images from the old school black and white movies were what came to mind when I first read the book. It was a beautiful, forbidden love story set in this vampire world — so it would make a fun movie. So I went in and read for Catherine, and I think I did a good job. But, truth be known, I didn't get the role originally.
Really? What happened?I thought I did a great job and Catherine liked me, but there was another actor that the studio was pushing for. I'm not naming names, no! I don't want him kicking himself. I guess he was doing another movie or they couldn't work out his deal or something. But when I read, I loved Catherine. She's full of passion and energy. I thought she was great and I really wanted to work with her. So when I found out I didn't get the role, I was bummed. Then I was in this bookstore and I saw this book of, like, 50 years of vampires in Hollywood — again, those old school shots of Bela Lugosi and the original Dracula and just the history and the lore. So I bought this book, and I sent it with a note to Catherine saying, "Look, I'm sorry it didn't work out. I really admire your work. I hope this book inspires you through the making of Twilight." And so when she got the call that this other actor wasn't working out, she looked down and saw that book and said, "Well, what about Peter Facinelli?" So I always joke that I bought the role of Dr. Carlisle Cullen for $29.99. And I was worth every penny.
And what did you think of the character of Carlisle? He's sort of an odd creature, a vegetarian vampire father figure.He's just a great soul, if vampires can have souls. He's 300-something-years-old, but looks 26. I kind of connected to the father figurehead aspect of him, because I have three children of my own. I enjoyed who he was as the patriarch of the family and how he saved these people's lives rather than taking them. He's sort of anti-vampire, despite being a vampire. It was an interesting nut to crack. And at first I was worried that I looked too young, because Carlisle's kids are in their late teens, early 20s, and I'm about ten years older, so I couldn't really be their father, so it would look strange on film. But in the book, they're his adopted children and he's supposed to be young. But also, he's a doctor, so he has this wisdom about him, which was interesting.
You're getting a lot of doctors now, huh?Yeah, I used to play a lot of cop roles, but now I've graduated to the doctors. I get to play doctor on my new Showtime dramedy, "Nurse Jackie" [with Edie Falco, premiering in January on Showtime], so it is back to back white coats. It's really quirky, not quite "Grey's Anatomy," but not really "Scrubs" either. But this doctor is completely 180 degrees away from Dr. Carlisle Cullen. This guy's a different creature all together. He's kind of cool and confident on the outside, but inside he's a big mess. He could use some tips from Carlisle.
How did you approach the role of Carlisle? Did you try vegetarianism?No, you know, it's weird; I started eating a lot more meat than I usually eat. I was just hungry for red meat the whole time. So it kind of had a backwards effect on me, because normally I'm more on the vegetarian side. So with this, I was eating steak all the time. I kind of [looked at] it from the point of view of being the patriarch in the family. I tried to make sure that even though I looked younger, there was a distinct separation between me and the kids. The character is 300-plus years [old] and he brings a lot of wisdom and experience to the table. So I tried to bring out that dignity and grace. And it was weird because I used to be the youngest one on the set, and this was one of my first projects where I was one of the oldest ones on the set. And that's pretty rare. I guess I'm becoming older. It's a blink of an eye and suddenly I'm the dad. But it was great working with Kristen Stewart, Rob Pattinson, and the other younger actors. Especially the newer actors. They have this energy and they're not jaded yet. So they have this freshness and spontaneity. And they all started calling me dad, which was funny.
Did that freak you out at all?No. I have children, so I'm used to it.
Had you heard about the Twilight Saga before you got the call?No, but I read the book in a day, and I couldn't put it down. I don't know what it is with Stephenie Meyer's writing, whether it's hypnotic or what, but most people I know who have read it can't put it down. My wife ["90210" star Jennie Garth] started reading them after I got the part, and she's on book four now. She literally read one after the other after the other just staying up till two in the morning. She literally couldn't put it down till she had to just pass out.

Have you read the rest of the series?I read the first three because I wanted to get a good sense of Carlisle Cullen. But now Jennie's got Breaking Dawn and she's not giving it up. She's halfway done now. But now I'm reading Stephenie Meyer's The Host. And my daughter Luca is 11, and she's read the first book. I haven't let her read the others yet because she's a little young for the content in those. But I also wanted her to be able to watch Twilight the movie as a story in and of itself. When you start reading the others, you get the bigger picture, but you lose sight of the first one on its own.
What did Luca think of it?She's really, really excited. And it's exciting for me because most of my film and TV work is aimed at adults, so she hasn't been able to see any of it. This is the first movie that I can actually have my kid see, and that's exciting to me. Usually Luca and my other two daughters [Lola and Fiona] can see their mom Jen's work, but they wonder what I do. So this is new for me. I'm excited about it. It's good to be able to have something that my kids can be a part of.
How was shooting in Portland, Oregon? As rainy as it seems?No, you know, we thought there would be a lot of overcast skies — that's why we went there. I don't know if it was global warming or what, but we ended up getting a lot of sunny days. Usually on a film set, sun is good. But with this one, it was the exact opposite. We were hoping for cloud coverage. And we'd want rain but we'd get sun.
Did you guys have to use a lot of SPF 50 to stay pale, or was it a lot of make-up?It was a little bit of both. As soon as we got the parts, we were told, "Do NOT go in the sun." It was in the contract! So I tried to stay out of the sun as much as possible. There was make-up involved, but the more tan you already were, the more make-up you'd need — and you don't want that really thick, cakey make-up on your face. So the paler you were, the easier it was in the make-up chair. So I'd be walking around L.A. pre-shoot, taking the kids to school in a hat and glasses and a hood. I looked like the Unabomber. And my wife would tell me I looked so pale I looked sickly. And then there were the contacts lenses.
How did those go over?I had to wear contacts for this movie I did called Supernova, so I've sort of gotten used to them. But when I first did that film, two technicians had to literally tie me to the chair and pop them in, I had such trouble. So some of the kids really had trouble with them on Twilight. But they did a lot better than I did on my first contact-lenses gig. We did the golden color because the Cullens have those golden eyes. And then, when we're hungry, we have to pop the red ones in. Those were pretty freaky. I definitely look very different in this film, between the blonde hair, the ghostly skin, and those contacts. It's different than anything else I've done before, which I loved.
They added a lot more action to the film version. Was it live-action or was there a lot of green screen?We had a lot of rehearsals. And these rehearsals were like cat classes to teach us that graceful, cat-like movement. We had to go in big with and then tone it down and down and down till it was very subtle. And we had a lot of action training sequences. But the biggest stunts were for the baseball scene — the scene with the thunder, where we're moving at super-speed. But we didn't do a lot of green screen, actually. What I love about this film is that it's kind of the anti-Harry Potter. They're big on green screen and studio perfection. This film is more raw, more character-driven. It's kind of like an art house film with a very commercial story. Catherine [Hardwicke] shoots almost documentary-style on this. There's a lot of hand-held with Twilight. It's very different than other films.
Are you aware the Twilighters and Twi-Hards, as they call themselves, who have been following the film's production?There's too much to follow! The fans starting showing up to the set before we really even started. They're so excited and it's exciting for us to be making something that people really want to see. I think if people are talking about it at all, it's a good thing. Whether they're what they're saying is positive or negative, it will get people to the theaters — and I think they'll be surprised.
Do you think the adaptation stays true to the book?Well, it's hard when you're doing a movie based on a book, because everyone already sees their own version in their head. So you can't ever match someone's interpretation of it. So this is Catherine's interpretation and our interpretations of the characters. But people going to the theater will be bringing their interpretations with them.
There's already talk about a New Moon adaptation.I'm on board for any and all Twilight Saga adaptations they want to make. I'm a huge fan. It's fun doing a movie that you'd really want to see. I have people come up and tell me they're crazy Twilight fans, and my response is, "So am I." I'd love to see more movies made.
So are you Team Edward or Team Jacob?Well, I'm completely biased but I have to say Team Edward. He's my family. And my wife is totally Team Edward. But it depends on which book she's reading. At one point, she was on New Moon, and she was like, "I'm Team Jacob, how could Edward do that?" But now she's dedicated to Edward.

'Twilight' Soundtrack Now Online?

It's perhaps the most sought-after movie soundtrack of the year, and now it's kinda sorta available online for you to throw on in the background while you dream of sexy vampire boyfriends and ... dark stuff! Yup, looks like most of the upcoming Twilight soundtrack has hit YouTube, and it features songs from angsty bands like Linkin Park, Collective Soul, The Black Ghosts and -- wait for it -- the super misunderstood hottie Robert Pattinson himself on a tune called Never Think. (Tell me this guy Pattinson didn't pick the right movie to sign on to? I hope he sends his agent flowers and candy every single day.)Other artists who appear on the pre-sold out album include Muse, Perry Farrell, Iron & Wine, Carter Burwell, MuteMath, Paramore and Blue Foundation. I've only listened to a few of the tunes (definitely dig the Collective Soul), and, ya know, it's Twilight -- so we're looking at darker, moodier, emo-esque vampire-ish tunes. For fans who don't want to listen to it on YouTube or wait until the album officially comes out on November 4th (pre-order it here), you can swing on by a Hot Topic store on Friday, October 24th at 7pm where they'll be hosting listening parties. Apparently Robert Pattinson has discovered the secret to quick success in film.
Pattinson, 22, previously best known as Cedric Diggory in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”, and soon to be best known for his leading role as the dazzling Edward Cullen in “Twilight”, stars in “How to Be” - an independent film currently showing only at film festivals.

Pattinson plays Art, a socially awkward failing musician going through a quarter-life crisis. Despite the departure from his typical supernaturally attractive characters, fangirls still flock in the thousands to see Rob play a normal guy (sub-normal, even). Twilight fans have been a big portion of the audiences viewing the movie on selected screens around the world.
One devoted Twilight follower, Liz Waters, the creator of twilight20somethings.com, traveled from Indiana to Kentucky for the showing of “How to Be” at the Derby City Film Festival in Louisville, Ky. on October 11. She was not the only one making a trek to solely see “How to Be” — as tickets went on sale the week prior to the showing, the directors of the festival recognized the special interest and advertised a possible second showing of the film if demand was high enough. Liz claimed that many of the audience members were decked out in Twilight gear, which actually caused speculation from the festival directors that they had only come to see Rob’s “pretty face”.
For some, this might have been the case. Some probably came because they hoped Rob would be in attendance, like it has been announced that he will be in Austin, Texas on October 18. Some might have merely come because they had heard he called into the Rhode Island Film Festival and wanted to be in the same room as his voice. Unfortunately for those hopefuls at the Derby City Film Festival, Pattinson actually called the New Orleans Film Festival for a phone interview instead, which occurred on the same night.
Waters says, however, that she was not there to simply drool over her favorite Brit. “One of my favorite aspects of the movie was that there was not one single trace of Edward Cullen in Robert’s performance. … It is roles like these that allow us viewers to see how versatile and brilliant he truly is.”
While her comment may sound a bit biased, Pattinson is receiving recognition for his performance from more than just Twilight’s rabid fan base. Unless you have been living under a rock for the last six months you must be aware of the new “Twilight” saga by author Stephanie Meyer. The book is basically targeted towards tweens and young adults but have crossed over to adults. The novel is the first series of vampire novels written by neophyte author Stephanie Meyer. It has been on the ‘‘NY Times’’ best-seller list for over 50 weeks and has been translated into over 100 languages. With the last installment of the saga that hit the shelves this year the saga was complete—or so we thought as her manuscript for the fifth book got leaked online— the ‘‘Twilight’’ series has reached cult status giving Harry Potter a run for his money.
The first book, called Twilight is basically a story about a teenage girl named Bella who falls in love with a good-looking vampire named Edward Cullen. The series of books which follow, Eclipse, New Moon and Breaking Dawn basically chronicle the struggle and difficulties of first love and forbidden love between a human and a vampire. Pretty simple plot really, like Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet mixed with The Hunger, a literary Buffy and Angel with a touch of the Roswell Teen dynamic combined with the heroines of Anne Rice’s vampire novels.
The cult following is so strong, 6,000 young screaming fans congregated in Comic Con a few months back. It has become such a worldwide sensation, Summit Pictures is coming out with a Twilight movie starring Robert Pattinson, the guy who played Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter. The big thing about the movie is that Summit is a small studio compared to Sony and Universal Summit financed this film for a measly $37 million, a paltry sum compared to the other movies like Harry Potter, but because of successful viral marketing and its cult following they have a franchise on their hands which will make them one of the big boys to be reckoned with. In spite of the fact that it is targeted to a female audience the Twillight fans and so-called ‘‘Twilight moms’’ will be enough for a successful box-office opening. And how lucky can former Harry Potter star Robert Pattinson be? Harry Potter actually moved its opening date to next year which opened up the perfect spot for the Twilight movie. And good news to all you fans out there the movie is scheduled to open first here in the Philippines, which according to my sources in Hollywood is to deter piracy.
Yes I am a bit obsessed with the book I read all four books in three days and it brought me back to a time in my youth where everything was new—from falling in love, getting your heart broken and moving out of your home for the first time. A lot of women I know got into the book as well and my friend and I call it the Twilight trance—a trancelike state of being after you read the book basically you end up, as the Pinoy vernacular would say, making “muni-muni”. Everyone I know who’s read it has gotten into a trance. A friend of mine who regularly goes to bed at 10 p.m. now goes to bed at 2 a.m. because of surfing the Net on all Twilight topics and is madly in love with Robert Pattinson.
The character of Pattinson in the book is called Edward Cullen, a man so breathtaking and romantic it’s hard to compare to a real man. Another friend of mine went out with this handsome Italian guy who was perfect but she couldn’t enjoy her date because her mind was on the fictional character of Edward Cullen. She then realized after that it was unfair to compare a real man to a fictional character in a book, much less a vampire at that!
Women around the world who have read it mostly agree that it’s hard for a real man to compare to this fictional character of Edward Cullen because most of the women who read the book now expect more from their man. Other women I know just walk around in a daze questioning their current relationships. I myself have been fascinated by the myth of vampires ever since I could read so my obsession with the novel isn’t a new thing. When I got into the Anne Rice books, I was living abroad and I went to every Goth bar you could think of in the east coast. But back then they didn’t call themselves Goth. They just wore a lot of black and wore Doc Martens.
Reading novels takes you out of your reality and opens up a new world for you to imagine. I read a lot of books and each one takes you to a different world and opens up your intellect and imagination. JK Rowling encouraged young people to read as the Harry Potter phenomena grew. Stephanie Meyer does the same with Twilight but the big difference between the two is that the crossover of readers to older women has become huge and has created a whole new fan base for her. If the Twilight books made women swoon imagine what the movie will do. Pattinson better enjoy this quiet time before the movie because when the movie opens, his life will change forever just like all those women who read the books as no real man will ever measure up to Edward Cullen.

Fans' appetites for Twilight insatiable Trailer lands millions of hits within 48 hours

Fans are ravenously consuming the latest online trailer for the hotly anticipated Twilight movie, which doesn't hit theatres for more than a month.The clip garnered 3.5 million hits within 48 hours of hitting myspace.com/trailerpark last Friday, and that's not counting how many times it was viewed after a friend emailed it to a friend, who emailed it to another friend. Well, you get the picture.
"It's every marketer's dream. It's truly viral," says Victor Rego, vice-president of marketing (Quebec), for E1 Films, Twilight's Canadian distributor.
It's by far the biggest film the Montreal-based company has been involved with, says Rego, who got a taste of things to come when the first Twilight teaser, released earlier this year, logged 4 million hits on MySpace, surpassing Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Rego said they're currently working on advanced ticket sales for the Nov. 21 premiere. "The growing aspect of Twilight is phenomenal," says Rego. "The fans are doing their own things, creating their own merchandise. They are ahead of what we are doing; It's totally fan-driven. We make them aware of what is going on and then it spreads like wildfire."
The movie, based on Stephanie Meyer's bestselling Twilight book series, stars Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan and Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen, a modern-day Romeo and Juliet couple with a twist – Edward's a vampire.
The trailer teases in all the right spots, giving fans an up-close look at the vampire trio James, Victoria (played by Montreal native Rachelle Lefevre) and Laurent, whose arrival threatens the couple's romance, but keeps secret the final looks of Bella's friend Jacob Smith and the rest of the Cullen clan.
The movie's fans are some of the most bloodthirsty out there, creating dozens of fansites (bellaandedward.com, hisgoldeneyes.com, www.twilightmoms.com, to name a few), and buying everything Twilight-related that's out there.
EW's July issue, with Stewart and Pattinson on the cover, was the magazine's best-selling cover of the year, outselling Dark Knight and Harry Potter covers, says Rego.
The soundtrack for the film, which doesn't come out until Nov. 4, is already No. 5 on Amazon.ca's bestseller list. It features MuteMath, Muse, Linkin Park and exclusive songs written for the movie by Paramore, Perry Ferrell and Pattinson.
Thankfully, there will likely be a sequel for fans to dig their teeth into after Twilight. Meyer's second book in the series, New Moon, has already been optioned by Summit Entertainment.

'Twilight' Already Gearing Up for Sequel (And New Pics from the First One)!

Twilight’s been receiving an insane amount of press recently with its release drawing near. As of now, the film has everything going for it: Harry Potter’s release date (when the next Potter got pushed back, Twilight jumped on the 11/21 slot like a rabid… well, vampire), Harry Potter’s tween dreamboat (Oh Harry, thank God for you that Cedric Diggory got killed because you have about as much a shot of competing with him as Rick Moranis does competing with Fabio for a woman’s affection), and crowds and crowds of screaming, crying teenage girls ready to tear down said dreamboat’s (Robert Pattinson’s) trailer. So what does all this mean? Oh, well, you know – this means sequel plans are underway before film 1 is even released. That’s precisely what Deadline Hollywood Daily’s reporting this morning.
According to DHD, Summit Entertainment’s CEO Rob Friedman is already getting his ducks in a row for a Twilight sequel. Does it seem too soon? Consider this: assuming that every movie theatre in America doesn’t burn to the ground before November 21st, Twilight looks to make up its 37-million-dollar budget in its first weekend at the box office alone. But if it can’t – don’t worry, Twilight has already basically surpassed said budget NOW. Twilight’s Soundtrack currently stands in the Top Five Selling Albums on Amazon.com – and oh yeah, it doesn’t even get released until November 4th – that’s just in pre-sales! Twilight also sold out a line of exclusive calendars printed by Borders in a matter of days. This merchandising combined with the relatively low budget of the flick (the first Harry Potter cost 125 million to make and the most recent clocked in at 150) spells success. And keep this in mind: When Twilight’s trailer first premiered on MySpace it nearly broke Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull’s internet record of trailer views in a two-day period by nabbing 3.5 million views in less than the 48-hour time period (that's tween vamps versus arguably the greatest adventurer of all time). If that doesn’t convince you, you might consider lowering your standards.
To celebrate the inevitable sequel—or, probably, SEQUELS—the film will spawn like so many copulating rabbits, we’ve got a treat for you—more Twilight pics! Rob Friedman, CEO of Summit Entertainment is already for the sequel to this November’s Twilight movie. New Moon will be based on the second novel in Stephanie Meyer’s hit book series.
Twilight reportedly cost a mere $37 million to make, and with all the hype surrounding this film (mainly from female audiences) the movie will easily make that back.
So it comes as no surprise that a sequel is already in the works. The film is breaking all sorts of records with its soundtrack already ranked in the top 5 best-selling albums on Amazon (and it’s not even out yet… it will be released on November 4th) and the newest trailer has landed 3 1/2 million views in less than 48 hours after hitting the net.

It’s risky business planning a sequel based on hype before anyone’s even seen the first film. We have no idea what the reaction of fans and critics will be and despite a built-in fan base from the book-buyers, it’s still difficult to predict box office numbers.
The studio estimates $20 million for opening weekend and many think they are low-balling with that number so that anything higher makes it look like a big win. While it’s probable that Twilight will make that much or more, it still could fall short if it flops and doesn’t hit members of any other demographics.
Me? I’m not going to see Twilight, but I know a lot of ladies who are already planning their evenings for opening night. I think no matter how good or poor the movie may end up being, the “fangirls” will be there for the sequels too, so long as they follow the books.

Hype Sparks Twilight Sequel

While I didn't find the latest trailer for Twilight to be all that incredible, Summit isn't really worried about me; as I'm not a high school girl. Taking advantage of the estrogen sect of moviegoers, Summit is reading into the film's hype and already has a sequel in the works.
Twilight Sequel The good people at DeadlineHollywoodDaily have reported that Summit Entertainment is readying a Twilight sequel. With little to go off of, why is the studio already geeked on the idea? Commercial hype mostly. The film's soundtrack, though not yet available, is already on Amazon's Top 5 Best-Selling Albums. Borders made a retail exclusive calendar in anticipation of the film and the first print sold out in a few days. On the viral side, reports claim that the film's latest trailer was watched 3.5 million times in the first 48 hours of its online debut. Strong indeed.While audiences have begun to compare Twilight to Harry Potter, there is one major difference. Summit's big-budget adaptation is surprisingly low-budget. The film's production cost was only $37 million, giving it tons of room to earn ample amounts of positive income.

Even with all the hype, Summit Entertainment is playing it smart and keeping their anticipations low. The studio is only expecting $20 million from Twilight's opening bow in North America. With a built-in audience thanks to 7.5 million domestic sales of the source material, expect the film to literally fly by this number. 'Twilight' Sequel Geared Up

Words are, Summit Entertainment have officially given a go ahead nod for the sequel, 'New Moon'
Though "Twilight" won't be hitting the big screen until November, Summit Entertainment have been reported to move ahead with the making of its sequel. Breaking out the report on Monday, October 13, Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood Daily noted that the sequel will be based on Stephenie Meyer's next book of the series, "New Moon". Though mentioning that the studio have officially gone ahead with their plan for the sequel, no further details about the sequel is shared. About the book from which the second movie will be based on, it has been said to be focused on losing true love. In the follow-up story, Isabella "Bella" Swan has grown to be an eighteen-year-old young woman. On "Twilight" itself, it is a modern day love story between a vampire and a human. It resolves around seventeen-year-old Bella, her mysterious vampire classmate, Edward Cullen, and their unlikely romantic relationship. Finding acceptance from one another, their romance blossoms. However, it puts Bella's life in grave danger as Cullen's nemesis comes to the town and sets his eyes on Bella. The Catherine Hardwicke-directed flick features the likes of Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Cam Gigandet, Edi Gathegi, Rachelle Lefevre and many others. Penned by Melissa Rosenberg, it is set to blast off in the big screen on November 21, taking the slot left by "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince".

SANTA MONICA, California — There aren't many people out there who can claim to have hung out with Miley Cyrus, Jamie Lynn Spears, Aly & AJ and Edward and Bella. But at the tender age of 18, rising star Christian Serratos has already proven adept at keeping one finger firmly on the pulse of teen pop culture.
Next month, the affable young actress — whose previous roles include TV guest spots, a Disney Channel movie and a recurring gig on Nickelodeon's "Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide" — will make her feature-film debut in one of the fall's most highly anticipated films. And before the movie's November 21 release, she had to swing by the MTV studios for her very own "Twilight" Tuesday, to tell us all about the bookish Angela Weber, her "I heart Edward" pins, Coldplay videos and her desire to get bloody in the sequels.

MTV: How did you become involved with "Twilight"?
Christian Serratos: Well, I'd heard of the books, but I didn't have any idea they were turning them into a movie. And when I found out, I was stoked. I read all the books; I couldn't put them down, and I just fell in love.
MTV: Did you read them all right away?
Serratos: Well, we only got one of each book. So me and my mom had to trade back and forth. When one of us was done, the other one got to read it. ... We were both like, "OK, don't tell me what happens — but hurry up!"
MTV: Did you already know you were playing Angela?
Serratos: I initially went in for Jessica. I did the auditions, and I got called in a couple times for Jessica. But reading the books, I fell totally in love with Angela. So when they said I was going to have the opportunity to audition for Angela, I really took advantage. I remember walking out of the room and being like, "OK, this is it." I put my hair up in a ponytail and — I wear glasses 24/7 — I took them off when I was auditioning for Jessica, but I put them back on. I just tried my hardest to really capture Angela — and I guess it worked! And I definitely wasn't blind, so that was a plus.
MTV: Tell us about your take on Angela.
Serratos: She is Bella Swan's good friend in school. She's a photographer. She's very committed to doing her best in school, and she's just there to befriend Bella and tries her hardest to make sure she feels comfortable in the new school. She's kind of timid and keeps to herself, but she's very sweet. She's a great girl.
MTV: Is your take on the character by the book, or have you injected bits of yourself?
Serratos: I brought myself to the character, of course, but I really didn't try to change her at all. She's there in the book; she's very alive [as] a character.
MTV: Tell us about your favorite scene you got to shoot.
Serratos: Oh, gosh, I don't know if I can pick one! They were all painful because it was very cold, but they were all so much fun. I think my two favorites would have to be the car crash scene (as glimpsed in the new "Twilight" trailer), which was actually the first scene that all the quote-unquote humans shot together, and it was probably one of the coldest days. It was raining and cold, and it was a very long day, but we all had a blast doing it. Watching the stunts and stuff was mind-boggling.
MTV: And the other?
Serratos: Another fun day was the scene at the beach; it was kind of a trek to get there. We had to go through the wilderness and woods, and we were all in our rain boots because it was so muddy. But we got down to the beach, and it was so beautiful. It looked like a Coldplay music video. I mean the water looked like snow, and it was cold, yes, but it was gorgeous.
MTV: Tell us more about the beach scene.
Serratos: Well, it's a scene where we are trying to get Bella to feel more comfortable, so we invite her to the beach with us. There's a group that's surfing, and I take pictures and just sort of mingle about. Apparently, Angela doesn't surf!
MTV: How closely did you get to work with Robert Pattinson?
Serratos: We got to do one scene, because there were definitely two worlds to the movie. He's really cool. Everyone loves him, and for good reason.
MTV: You were once in an episode of "Hannah Montana," correct?
Serratos: Oh, yeah. [Laughs.]
MTV: So, do you see a comparison between the fanbases?
Serratos: Both worlds have their dedicated fans, but I don't really compare them to each other. They were both fun experiences to work on, but I think it ends there.
MTV: Do you think "Twilight" is more adult?
Serratos: Um, I guess. But I think they share the same age range when it comes to fans.
MTV: Have you received any crazy gifts or anything from the Twilighters?
Serratos: Well, I was sent — I guess a lot of the "Twilight" people — [our] names were sent into space. And so were you, right?
MTV: Yeah, you heard about that?
Serratos: [Laughs.] So, I guess our names are chilling out together up there. Whatever. It's cool.
MTV: Kinda cool, huh?
Serratos: I know; I got that packet, and I was like: "NASA certificates, what? That's not normal!" And someone was like, "Yeah, they sent your name into space." All right! Pretty cool.
MTV: If you were a vampire, would you be a vegetarian or would you suck human blood?
Serratos: I'd have to be a vegetarian vampire. I'm a vegetarian now, so it goes hand in hand, right?
MTV: As a vegetarian, when you read the books, do you see that as a good message?
Serratos: You know, I never really thought that far into it, but definitely. I mean, if I were a vampire, I definitely wouldn't be after the humans. That's a good message. If you're ever a vampire, don't eat humans.
MTV: You told us a while back that you were on the bookstore waiting list to buy "Breaking Dawn" with everyone else.
Serratos: Uh-huh. I went, and I picked up my copy.
MTV: Did you go at midnight with all the thousands of screaming fans?
Serratos: Yes, I did; me and three of my friends walked in, and we went to two different places, just because we were anxious to see what people had to do. We snuck in and grabbed our books and bolted out. There were people passing out bookmarks and crazy stickers and pins and stuff. I saw these two "I heart Edward" pins and "I heart Jacob" pins, and I was like, "Mine!" I got those. I was so excited to get any little stuff for "Twilight."
MTV: Were you recognized by anybody?
Serratos: I definitely got looks, but I would be too shy to go up to them. I think that's the case: People get shy. I was definitely shy to walk in there.
MTV: Which scene would you most love to shoot in the "Twilight" sequels?
Serratos: In "Breaking Dawn," there was this dream Bella had about her good friends being dead. It was such a gruesome scene in the book. I think it'd be way fun to do that, like bloodying me up or something, and I could just lie there. That'd be fun.
MTV: Every year at Comic-Con, we see middle-aged people who are still signing autographs from some beloved TV show or movie they did decades ago. You're only 18 now, but would you be OK with being asked about "Twilight" for decades to come?
Serratos: I wouldn't have a problem with that. I mean, if that's what this has done, then who am I to hate on that? That's great, I think. "Twilight" has been a great opportunity, and it's been great fun. Hey, if I'm 50, and someone still wants an autograph for "Twilight," OK, cool.

Taylor Lautner's smile arrives in the hotel lobby before he does -- a huge white movie-star grin।
The 16-year-old Hudsonville native has a lot to smile about.
Monday, he'll be on TV in one of NBC's most-hyped shows of the new season, a spy drama called "My Own Worst Enemy," starring Christian Slater.
The buzz couldn't be bigger for his November movie, "Twilight," based on the phenomenally popular teen vampire books by Stephenie Meyer.
Last month, his cool quotient went up when he was a presenter at MTV's Video Music Awards, appearing with "Twilight" co-stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart.
As Kimberly writes on the Taylor Lautner fan Web site: "Taylor is SO SO SO SO SO HOT!"
Taylor hails from Hudsonville but moved to Los Angeles in 2003 to pursue an acting career.
Things worked out. His big break came at age 13 when he was cast as Shark Boy in the 2005 movie "The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl." Then he won a role in "Cheaper by the Dozen 2," with Steve Martin and Hilary Duff.
He sat down to chat in the hotel lobby at Country Inn and Suites on 28th Street SE, where his family stayed during a recent trip to Michigan to visit

In 2005: Taylor as Shark Boy in the kid superhero movie "The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl।" After he auditioned, Taylor got a call-back to meet with director Robert Rodriguez and his 8-year-old son, Racer. Racer came up with the idea for the movie. "I guess Robert held up pictures of the kids that had call-backs and he said to Racer, 'Which one do you like?' He said, 'That one,' and pointed to me. And Robert said, 'That's what I was thinking.'" At age 12, he choreographed his martial arts fight scene in the film.

He's wearing the jeans and hip T-shirt of a 16-year-old, but he has the confident self-assuredness of somebody older. Easygoing with a near constant smile, Taylor seems comfortable in his skin, although he has this disconcerting jiggly knee thing he calls "my worst habit." He twists his hip, styled-but-messy hair with his fingers a lot as he talks.
Taylor says he's a regular kid who loves football, movies and cake batter ice cream. He poses shirtless for teen heartthrob photos, but still says stuff like, "Oh, my goodness."
"I'm no different than anybody else," he shrugs.
Except girls everywhere are giddily typing, "I love him sooooo much!" and "His smile makes me melt" on Internet fan sites. He's featured in just about every teen magazine on the stands. He's all over YouTube.
"I try not to pay attention to it," he says of the "Taylor is so hot" talk. "That stuff just comes with it."
That stuff is building with the frenetic anticipation of the teen vampire film "Twilight," which opens Nov. 21.
When Taylor auditioned for a role in the film last November, he had never heard of the book.
"My agent said, 'You really want this -- it's a big one.'"
He auditioned, then heard they had narrowed it down to three actors to play Jacob Black, a teen werewolf.
As days and weeks passed, "I realized how big it was," he says. "Suddenly, it was all over the Internet. I started hearing about all the hype, all the fans. I thought, 'Oh my goodness. If I get this, it'll be huge.' I realized I really want this."
Plenty of excitement
Not since Harry Potter has a book-to-film project inspired so much excitement. More than 100 fan sites are devoted to the "Twilight" phenomenon, some solely about Taylor's popular character, Jacob Black.
A month after Taylor auditioned, he got a phone call. His dad, his agent and his manager were all on the phone.
"I knew," he says with a grin. "I was sweating, I was so excited."
His character is introduced in the first book of the series, but isn't huge. "I'm only in three scenes in the first movie," he says.
But Jacob becomes a big part of the story in the books that follow, as his rivalry with vampire Edward intensifies. Which means fans already are rabid for the loyal werewolf.

Press File PhotoBook-signing: Taylor stopped by RiverTown Crossings Barnes & Noble in August for the midnight-release party for the final book in the "Twilight" series, "Breaking Dawn।" He signed books and posed for photos for two hours. "I just want to pay respect to my hometown," he says. "This is where I grew up." Of his fans, he says: "They keep you going. They're why I get to do this."

Taylor was amid the frenzy at RiverTown Crossings' Barnes & Noble in August at the midnight-release party for the final book in the "Twilight" series, "Breaking Dawn." In town to visit family, he dropped in for a surprise visit.
As he entered the book store, he heard the buzz start: "That's Jacob Black! It's Jacob Black!"
"Then I heard this mom say, 'No, that kid's name is Taylor. He used to live across the street from me.' And the girls said, 'No, that's Jacob Black.' And the mom said, 'No, that's Taylor -- he's my old neighbor.'" He laughs.
"She didn't know I was gonna be in the movie."
He signed books for two hours.
"I didn't realize 1,000 girls were gonna be there," he says. He stayed at the bookstore, signing and posing for photos, until the last gleeful girl had left -- at 2 a.m.
"I would feel miserable if I left and there were still 100 girls who had been waiting two hours to get my autograph," he says.
He says nothing prepared him for the reaction at Comic-Con International in July in San Diego -- the huge convention for comic books and other popular art forms -- when 125,000 people tried to get into a preview of the "Twilight" film and a panel discussion with the cast. Only 6,500 fit in the auditorium.
"There were 11,000 people waiting in line for autographs," he says, shaking his head। While he was there, he and other cast members did 52 online and radio interviews and 25 TV interviews, he says.

How does he keep from getting a big head?
Taylor laughs.
"My parents wouldn't allow it," he says. "That's not the way they brought me up."
Taylor's dad, Dan, says as Taylor's star rises, so does their determination to keep him grounded.
"Because of all that's happening for him, we want him to do normal things," Dan says. "We kept him in public school as long as we could, so he could be with his peers. We give him responsibilities at home -- chores he has to do. He gets an allotted allowance and he has to budget it.
"We're trying to teach him things, so that when he goes out on his own, he'll be prepared."
It's been a crazy couple of months for the whole family, Dan says, adjusting to Taylor's increasingly higher profile among obsessed fans as buzz builds for the "Twilight" movie. They're doing their best, he says, to keep their son's personal life private.
"We want to protect him," he says. They also want to celebrate.
"We had no idea what was gonna happen," Dan says of his son's career. "We tell him 'You have no idea what's gonna happen tomorrow, so enjoy today. Have fun.'"
Early days
Taylor was born in Grand Rapids and lived on Rosewood Avenue SE until he was 4, then moved to Hudsonville with his parents Dan, a commercial airline pilot, and mom Deb, a former Herman Miller employee and now project manager for a software development company. He has a younger sister, Makena, 9.
A sports kid, he loved wrestling, football, basketball. At age 6, he started lessons at Fabiano's Karate in Holland.
By age 7, he attended his first national karate tournament in Louisville, Ky. There, he met Mike Chat, who specialized in extreme karate, with stunts and flips. He ran a camp at UCLA and invited Taylor to attend.
"I fell in love," he says. "By the end of the camp, I was doing aerial cartwheels with no hands."
He trained with Chat for the next several years, earning his black belt and winning several junior world championships. Chat suggested Taylor try acting.
"He saw that I wasn't shy, that I was confident, that I talked a lot," Taylor says.
That you were cute?
He looks embarrassed. "Yeah, I guess."

The Lautners would fly to California for auditions when the talent agency called.

"They'd call at 9 or 10 at night, which was 6 or 7 their time, and say, 'We've got an audition tomorrow -- can you be here?' We'd leave really early in the morning and get there about noon," Taylor says. "I'd go to the audition in the afternoon, take the red-eye back to Grand Rapids then go to school."

They'd do that a couple of times a month. Taylor was 11.

"Then we decided, 'This is insane,'" he says. "We can't keep on doing this." The family decided to move to L.A. for a month, "to try it," he says.

"I got one call-back," he says. "That gave me the drive to keep going." He grins. "It happened on our very last day there."

The next step -- move there for six months. Taylor landed a "Rugrats" movie commercial for Nickelodeon.

"It was my first job -- I was so ecstatic," he says with a grin. "I thought, 'This is what I've been waiting for.'"

The Lautners moved to L.A. five years ago.

"It was a big deal to leave," Taylor says. "All our family was here." His dad's family is in Traverse City, his mom's in Manistee. Several aunts and uncles live in Hudsonville.

"There were more auditions. I heard no, no, no, no, so many times." He says karate helped him hang in there.

"From karate, I had the confidence and drive to push myself," he says.

He had those traits early, says his former karate instructor and family friend Tom Fabiano, who started teaching Taylor when he was 6.

"A lot of boys that age are bouncing off the walls, but Taylor was always deliberate, focused," says Fabiano, owner and instructor of Fabiano's Karate in Holland. "He wasn't a typical kid. He always worked extra hard."

Taylor stops by to see him every time he's in town visiting family, Fabiano says.

"He signs autographs for all the kids, poses for pictures. He's still that well-mannered, great kid."

Moms love him, too, Fabiano adds with a laugh.

"There was one mom here, a big 'Twilight' fan, and when I told her Taylor was gonna stop in she screamed, 'I have to meet him!'"

Small roles

In his first months in L.A., Taylor landed some small TV roles and voice-over work. Then, at 12, he won a starring role in the movie "The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl," a superhero kid movie directed by Robert Rodriguez, who had directed the popular "Spy Kids" films.

"Oh, we freaked out," Taylor says with a grin. "My whole family couldn't sleep for, like, a week."

When "Shark Boy" hit theaters in summer 2005, Taylor was in Canada filming "Cheaper by the Dozen 2," playing Eliot Murtaugh, a neighbor of the Baker family. He had scenes with Steve Martin.

"That's when I stopped looking at movie stars as movie stars, and just looked at them as people," he says.

He returned from Canada to newfound fame as the kid star of "Shark Boy."

"Ten-year-old boys were the ones who first recognized me," he says. "I'd be in the store, and boys would whisper to their moms. Then the moms would say, 'Excuse me -- are you Shark Boy?"

He grins.

"I just thought it was so cool," he says. "I couldn't believe people wanted my picture."

The number of fans approaching him tripled after "Cheaper by the Dozen 2," he says. "But now, it was girls."

At school, he says, he remained a regular kid.

"Kids still looked at me as Taylor, because they knew me from before," he says. "You gotta remember who your friends were before you got famous." There are people, he says, who "suddenly want to be your best friend."

Monday night, he'll be more famous.

In "My Own Worst Enemy," which debuts at 10 p.m. Monday on NBC, he plays Jack Spivey, the teenage son of main character Henry Spivey, played by Christian Slater. Commercials have been hyping the show for weeks.

"My character is a star varsity soccer player," Taylor says. "And I'm gonna be able to use some of my martial arts." He grins. "It'll be cool."

He's firmly rooted in Hollywood, "but I love coming back here," Taylor says of Michigan. "In L.A., whatever you do for fun, you gotta spend money. Here, you go jet skiing on a lake. It's such a fun place for me. I go fishing with one set of grandparents, I go quad riding with the other set. We go trap shooting. It's so much fun.

"Here, people are way more down-to-earth."

Lautner may be "just like everybody else," but he's movie-star guarded about his personal life.

I tried to get the YouTube version embedded up in here, but it looks like it's been yanked down -- which means you're better off going through the official Twilight website, which will direct you to the appropriate social networking site। Because what's more social than sitting in a quiet movie theater for two hours?I tried to check out the trailer for myself, but between the always-twitchy MySpace and the various "blockers" I have installed on my browser ... it just didn't happen. So I'll leave it to those hardcore fans who already love the film (despite the fact that it doesn't open until the end of next month) to tell me how this new promo clip rates on the omg-O-meter. Snap Judgment: The final 'Twilight' trailer

I guess it's a good thing I know more about vampires than technology, because it took the Army Corps of Engineers a tech-savvy friend and much nail-biting to figure out how to install the $%#& Twilight widget so I could watch the damn thing. By the time I got it to work, the trailer was already on YouTube. But! Check it out, and my initial impression, below:

Twilight
1. The kiss between Bella and Edward -- not a bad one. Almost hot, actually. Based on the film's poster, I was afraid they'd have zilch chemistry. Happy to see I might be wrong.
2. Is it just me, or does Robert Pattinson's American accent make him sound a little like a young Marlon Brando? Bella: "You've gotta give me some answers!" Edward: "I'd radda hear your tearies." And a little further in, "My famlee, we're different from udders of our kind." A Godfadder in the making.
3. I wish I could've seen more than a split second of Alice and the rest of the Cullens, and met Jacob too.
4. That's a cool trick Edward pulls with the apple. In fact, all the action seems pretty cool, though the dialogue could definitely use a little, uh, juice.

The final trailer for Twilight has leaked onto YouTube. I’ve pretty much given up all hope on this film, but I’m sure there are a few teenage girl readers who might be interested. As always, tell me what you think in the comments below!

New Movie Poster For "Twilight" Released, Hype Over Movie Continues To Build

Los Angeles, CA (CNS) - The new theatrical poster for the highly anticipated movie "Twilight" has been released, and suffice it to say the vampire looks creepy. With reddish eyes, he looks like he "wants to suck your blood."
The poster will probably thrill Twilight fans, however, who love Edward Cullen, played by "Harry Potter's" Robert Pattinson, and aren't worried one bit that he is secretly a vampire.
The movie, based on the bestselling book series by Stephenie Meyer, is only six weeks away, but the hype around the movie is already building. One trailer for the movie is already online and the movie's website is promising another trailer on Thursday.
The movie will arrive in theaters on November 21.
The official soundtrack for the movie has also been announced. The 12-track album features music from Linkin Park, Collective Soul and Paramore. Pattinson has also recorded a song for the soundtrack, called "Never Think."
The soundtrack will be released November 4. .

Final Twilight Movie Poster Is Both Mysterious And Expressionless

Personally, these posters don’t do anything for me. I don’t understand the point of their style - as in the previous posters, Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen looks “mysterious” and Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan has a blank expression.
All the posters for this movie seem way too simple and do not feature anything from the film except the look of the characters (characters who happen to be played by not-very-well-known actors no less).
For larger resolution versions of the poster, head over to Cinematical.
I guess they’re marketing only to those who’ve read the books. Other than through word-of-mouth, I don’t see how this promo material will appeal to the movie-going audiences who’ve not read the novels.
So, have you read the novels? If you’re not familiar with the books, are you interested in seeing the film?
Twilight hits North American theaters on November 21st, 2008 and the U.K. theaters on December 19th, 2008.

You already knew Paramore and Perry Farrell had secured spots on the "Twilight" soundtrack, but there was much speculation about who else would be joining them. Would author Stephenie Meyer's faves, Muse, make the cut? Or how about Blue October, whose frontman Justin Furstenfeld toured with Meyer back in August? And while we're at it, maybe Vampire Weekend or the Blood Brothers could sneak their way on there — you know, thanks to their names and all.
Well, we can stop speculating: On Monday (October 6), the folks at Chop Shop Records (and Atlantic Records too) announced the official track listing for the "Twilight" soundtrack, which arrives in stores on November 4.
And to answer your questions: Yes, Muse are on there. No, Blue October aren't. And neither are Vampire Weekend or the Blood Brothers (they broke up last year, after all).
Instead, the soundtrack boasts contributions from Linkin Park, Iron & Wine, MuteMath and Collective Soul. Also, Team Edward fans will rejoice that star Robert Pattinson's song "Never Think" made the cut. Producers also confirmed that all the songs featured on the soundtrack will actually be in the "Twilight" movie, making good on director Catherine Hardwicke's promise that though Pattinson's version of "Bella's Lullaby" was ultimately replaced, his musical talents didn't go to waste.
In addition to Paramore's "Decode," which premiered on Meyer's Web site last week, their song "I Caught Myself" is also on the soundtrack. According to a source at Atlantic, the band is slated to shoot a video for "Decode," the album's first single, early next week.

Paramore are set to return with two new tracks on the soundtrack to a forthcoming vampire movie.Teen horror flick 'Twilight' is set to be released in December and is directed by Catherine Hardwicke, adapted from the popular series of books.The band are shooting a video to one of the tracks, 'Decode', which will be released as a single.Hardwicke has also suggested that the soundtrack will feature a song from Muse.Meanwhile, Paramore are readying a live DVD set for release at the end of November. Summit and Twilight: Was a Bigger Budget Needed?

Vampire love: It's not about the money?

OMG. I can hardly remember the last time I stayed up until 4:00 a.m. devouring a novel by flashlight (okay, LED book light), like a schoolgirl after lights out. I think it was ... 1980 ... um, I mean, actually, I think Twilight is my first time. Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret wasn't nearly as much of a page turner.

Well, whatever. Have you seen the trailer for the movie? I did. And it's made me afraid, very afraid. Not of rain-soaked vampires. Of the movie. Watching the trailer for the film, I couldn't help but feel somehow ... crestfallen. Immediately, I got the urge to cover my eyes and ears whilst humming loudly, and to stay far away from theaters in November. (As if I could.)

Sure, if we rounded up the Bella and Edward in every Twilighter's brain and put them in a room (or a casting call), they might not resemble Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. (Bella's voice is way huskier than I imagined.) But having the features of the vegetarian vampire of my dreams redefined by a Hollywood face isn't the real problem. It's that watching the trailer, something seems missing or lost in translation to film (well, film trailer). The Meyer ambiance is missing, that mist of dangerous magic and surreal beauty that perfumes the pages of her books, like the sparkle of immortal skin in a sunlit meadow, or the devastating perfection of vampire beauty. Could this absence be due to the insufficiency of the most magical thing of all (in Hollywood at least) -- money?

Twilight's production budget was a paltry $37 million dollars. Is that enough to launch the film franchise of the most beloved book series since Harry Potter? Especially if the studio behind it, Summit Entertainment, wants to convert audiences who have never read Meyer's books? The Potter series dished out $125 million for its big-screen debut.

Even if we compare bloodsuckers to bloodsuckers, Interview With The Vampire spent $60 million in 1994. Haven't Hollywood prices gone up, way up, since 1994? Then again 30 Days of Night was a mere $32 million in 2007. Is that the look Summit is going for?

True, the U.S. economy is currently in a crunch. But Summit reportedly wrangled more than $1 billion in financing in April 2007, thanks to Merrill Lynch (who could have used some of that cash a few weeks ago).

Yet, most of Summit's releases so far have run somewhere in the $20 million range. On the lower end, Penelope only got $15 million. While on the costlier side, Step Up 2 the Streets got $22 million. Twilight suddenly seems like a bit of a splurge. Perhaps Summit is simply an unusually frugal film studio. Or, they're funneling the remainder of their funding into something more sinister, like a series of Judy Blume-based musicals starring Meryl Streep, starting with Are You There God? It's Me, Meryl. Hmm ... I hope no one in Hollywood heard that.

Yet, for many the heart of Twilight's allure is the book's breathlessly intimate and intense close-up of true, star-crossed love. While a panoramic perspective of Bella's surface surroundings at Forks High, or wherever, reveals a world that's often ordinary and frequently dreary. Would adding more special-effects bling not only be unnecessary, but ruin Meyer's subtle mood? Is Summit saving the sparkle for New Moon? But by then won't it be too late to get the attention of some moviegoers?

Is $37 million enough? Or did Bella and Edward, and their Twilight fan following deserve (and need) a bigger first film allowance or a bigger-spending film studio?

Peter Facinelli Compares 'Twilight' Patriarch Carlisle Cullen To His Breakthrough Role In 'Can't Hardly Wait'

Check out Peter Facinelli's message board on IMDb, and one of the first headlines you'll see is "Mike Dexter cannot play Carlisle!" But, believe it or not, Facinelli is an actor, and he firmly believes that his iconic jerk from "Can't Hardly Wait" and the sensitive, kind Carlisle Cullen can share the same body.
Now, a decade after he burst onto the scene as a jerky jock in the film that launched the careers of everyone from Seth Green to Jaime Pressly to Jason Segel and Selma Blair, "Can't Hardly Wait" is back for a 10th-anniversary DVD. Looking back on the role that started it all, and ahead to the "Twilight" movie that will take his career to the next level November 21, the affable actor spoke with us recently about locking himself in a tool shed, buying off the "Twilight" director for 30 bucks, and what would happen if Mike and Carlisle were to meet.
MTV: Most teen movies come and go so fast. Why do people still care about "Can't Hardly Wait" a decade later?
Peter Facinelli: I think people just identify with the movie. I remember in high school there were the cliques. Every table at lunch had a different group. ... I still get people that are going through high school now, and they're like, "I love 'Can't Hardly Wait!' " And I'm like, "You were 5 when that movie came out!"
MTV: We learn from the bonus features on this new disc that you landed your role after walking into the audition room and ... doing push-ups?
Facinelli: [Laughs.] Yeah, when you're younger, you just want to walk in and be the role. [The casting people] laughed, but I ended up getting the part. So I guess it was a good call.
MTV: Have you ever done something like that, but it didn't work?
Facinelli: Oh, I've done some really crazy things for auditions. There was a movie called "Return to Paradise" that Joaquin Phoenix ended up doing. You're going to think I'm completely insane, but it was about a guy who was put in prison abroad for selling drugs. ... I locked myself up in a shed for three days, and I had my wife come out and feed me. I went straight from the shed to my audition, so I was freaking out because I was paranoid. It was a great audition, but Joaquin ended up getting it.
MTV: You have this classic moment in "Can't Hardly Wait" where Mike Dexter enters the movie and declares, "It's like I always say," and then belches. So can you burp on cue?
Facinelli: No, that was a complete post-production thing!
MTV: So you belched later in a sound booth?
Facinelli: No, that's literally some foley person — or maybe some kind of electronic burp? I don't know. I can't burp on cue.
MTV: Take us through this scenario: Imagine that the plot of "Can't Hardly Wait 2" has the nerds fatally wounding Mike Dexter. He's stumbling around in the woods, bloody, and is discovered by Dr. Carlisle Cullen. Would Carlisle turn him?
Facinelli: [Laughs.] No, I don't think Carlisle would transform Mike Dexter [into a vampire]. I think he'd have to let Mike Dexter go. Carlisle doesn't have that much compassion.
MTV: If Carlisle took pity and bit him, he'd have to spend all of eternity hanging out with a vampire Mike Dexter.
Facinelli: Exactly! That would not be good. I think Carlisle's compassion lies in humanity — so he'd have to let Mike Dexter die. It would serve all of humankind. Besides, there's so much beer in the bloodstream that he'd totally get drunk off Mike Dexter's blood.
MTV: Did you do anything crazy for your "Twilight" audition?
Facinelli: It wasn't crazy, but I'll tell you what I did: I was reading for Carlisle, and I read ["Twilight"] in a day and absolutely loved the book. I went in and read for [director] Catherine [Hardwicke], and I did a good job, and Catherine had a small list of actors that she wanted to play the role. Unfortunately, the role didn't go to me.
MTV: Really?
Facinelli: Yeah, when the role went to someone else, I was pretty bummed, but I really liked Catherine. I owned a vampire book that [depicted] 50 years of vampire moviemaking throughout the years in Hollywood. It was an old-school book. I sent it to Catherine just to say, "Hey, maybe this can inspire you while doing the movie," thinking that the role was done and gone. But the other actor was working on another movie and couldn't do ["Twilight"], so when it was time to go back to the short list, Catherine was looking at my book. She was like: "What about Peter Facinelli?" As I've told Catherine, I bought my way into "Twilight" for $29.90.
MTV: The other actor was Matthew McConaughey, wasn't it?
Facinelli: [Laughs.] No, but close. It was a name actor, but he was, like, 10 years older than me. Physically, I don't think he was right for it.
MTV: Everyone is eager for info about the reshoots on "Twilight." How did they go?
Facinelli: Mine is basically a scene that shows us meeting the Indian tribe on their land and forming a treaty.
MTV: Did you enjoy wearing the 1930s clothes?
Facinelli: Yeah, I had on Old English hunting pants with high boots and an old '30s cap.
MTV: Is Kellan Lutz wearing a zoot suit?
Facinelli: No. [Laughs.] Kellan pretty much had on the same '30s vest and collared shirts, and it looked like we were out hunting.
MTV: We've heard that the scene will just be a visual, showing us the moment while a voice-over explains the treaty. So did you guys even have lines?
Facinelli: We were saying lines here and there. You never know if they're going to end up using them or just using a voice-over. ... We are at the disposal of the editing room. They put the final cut together. You do a bunch of stuff, and then they pick and choose. We tried different things — I even tried speaking in Indian, because I thought when I met the Indians, it'd be cool if Carlisle spoke a little native tongue.
MTV: Did you just make up words?
Facinelli: No, there were some real Native Americans there that gave me a couple of lines.
MTV: What were you saying?
Facinelli: I said something like, "Wait! We come in peace!" — or something like that.
MTV: Maybe the footage could make it on to the "Twilight" DVD. Have you heard anything about bonus features yet?
Facinelli: I know that they have a ton of footage, because we had a behind-the-scenes videographer there the whole time. ... Hopefully, if the fans petition, they'll come out with a documentary on the behind-the-scenes as a separate little DVD.
MTV: It could be like the documentary on the behind-the-scenes insanity of "Apocalypse Now."
Facinelli: Yeah, we'll have our own "Hearts of Darkness" version of "Twilight"!
MTV: Is there any Facinelli footage of you losing it behind the scenes?
Facinelli: No. [Laughs.] I don't think so. But there might be. You'd have to check with the videographer on that.
MTV: Any Mike Dexter moments where everybody turned against you?
Facinelli: I think someone might have called me a f-- [like somebody did to Mike Dexter in "Can't Hardly Wait"]. I'm looking around and screaming, "Did someone just call Carlisle a f--?"
MTV: You're like, "Pattinson! I know it's you!"
Facinelli: Yeah, and then Carlisle screams, "I'll kick everyone's ass in this room!"

We were shocked — shocked! — to hear that some miscreant leaked a draft of Stephenie Meyer’s Midnight Sun on the Internet.
This was her little writing exercise that was evolving into a novel, telling the story of her megahit Twilight through the gorgeous golden eyes of vampire heartthrob Edward Cullen.
Thievery! We refused to so much as peek, even when Meyer reluctantly decided to fight back and post the rough, incomplete story on her own site, www.stepheniemeyer .com.
But we could hold out for only so long. Sorry, Stephenie, but this is a must-read for any self-respecting Twilight fan, especially with the movie version coming Nov. 21. Robert Pattinson, who plays Edward, used Midnight Sun to get into character, after all.
Here’s some of what we learned:
•Turn-ons: Besides Bella’s alluring scent, Edward is drawn to this human for her bravery, maturity, selflessness, kindness, incredible skin and “eyes like melted chocolate,” even before she falls for him.
•Major self-confidence issues: He has no clue any girl could even like him. His cold hands must be repellent. His perfect smile must be terrifying. His whole persona must seem sinister.
•That’s true, sort of: Edward was just too intense for most mere humans; he didn’t soften up until he was courting Bella. So the whole chick magnet thing is new for him.
•Most humans are so pitiful: Since Edward can read pretty much everyone’s mind, we learn more about two-faced Jessica, shallow Mike, annoying Tyler and other characters populating Forks, Wash.
But — big sigh — the manuscript is just 264 pages and stops right before the fantastic glittering meadow scene halfway into Twilight.
“I feel too sad about what has happened to continue working on Midnight Sun, and so it is on hold indefinitely,” Meyer wrote on her site.
Nooooo! Maybe we can use the power of the press to change her mind and get Edward’s version completed and into bookstores where it belongs. Hey, it’s been almost a month now since her depressing announcement.
You know, send a little Sun shine her way.

Visitors flock to Forks, Wash., for ‘Twilight’ magic

FORKS, Wash. Pounding rain and heavy mist are constant in this timber town where logging’s decline left a graveyard of rusting timber mills and unemployment. Businesses shut down. Parts of the local high school were condemned. Families started to drift away.
Until an unlikely cast of vampires breathed new life into the town.
“I fell in love with it,” says 18-year-old Samantha Cogar, who dragged her grandparents on a 2,500 mile roadtrip to Forks from Louisville, Ky., earlier this summer. “I can’t wait to go back.”
Cogar is one of thousands of visitors who have flocked to Forks in response to “Twilight,” the hottest series to hit shelves since “Harry Potter.” Set in Forks, on the gritty edge of the Olympic Mountain Range, the books have captured the hearts of readers around the world.
In a town framed by towering Douglas fir, hemlock and spruce and the occasional western red cedar, where rough, blue collar edges are tangible, the unexpected attention seems to be a second chance for the economy. Inspired by a world of make-believe, “Twilight” fans are bringing the town back to life.
Four years ago, author Stephenie Meyer introduced the world to Bella Swan, a 17-year-old who moves to Forks and is torn between the love of classmate Edward Cullen and best friend Jacob Black. But before long, she realizes something isn’t right: Edward is a vampire and Jacob, a werewolf.
Readers were hooked, and three more “Twilight” books followed. “Breaking Dawn,” the fourth and final book of her “Twilight” series, came out in August and has remained at the top of best-seller lists ever since. Teens throughout the country celebrated the release of the book by dressing up as characters from the series for midnight parties at bookstores — much the way “Harry Potter” books are launched.
As the pages kept coming, the series’ cultlike following increased. Before long, fans started showing up in Forks, looking to see if magic would spark when imagination collided with reality. What they found was a two-stoplight town where more than a foot of rain falls each year. A place where success is measured in sweat and four-wheel drive.
But Forks was quick to embrace the frenzied fans.
Forks’ “Twilight”-inspired turn has been nothing short of magical, Marcia Bingham, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, says.
“We’ve probably had more than 100 people a day,” says Bingham, who has eagerly watched as van after van of giddy readers — mostly female — pull up in front of the town’s visitors center.
For many fans, the line where reality ends and imagination begins is starting to blur, says Michael Gurling, who caught inspiration from the tourism boom and started his own Twilight Tours.
After enlisting a few locals, he asked for help in picking out houses that could serve as stand-ins for the book’s famous Forks’ stops: Bella and Edward’s houses, a field where vampires play baseball. Other locations, such as the police station, where Bella’s father works, and the hospital, where Edward’s father is a doctor, play their own parts. They chipped in, providing cruisers near which fans may take pictures and reserving a spot for “Dr. Cullen” in the parking lot.
“The most popular spot is probably the beach, in LaPush, where Bella finds out the truth about Edward,” says Gurling.

'Twilight' Stars Kristen Stewart, Nikki Reed, Taylor Lautner Get Cagey About Reshoots

HOLLYWOOD — As fans from Boston to Bombay now know, the stars of "Twilight" recently reunited to shoot some additional scenes for director Catherine Hardwicke. Although MTV uncovered some of the new info when we caught up with the stars at the VMAs and other events around Hollywood, many details remain a mystery.
At the party to celebrate Teen Vogue's Young Hollywood issue, we spoke with stars Kristen Stewart (Bella), Nikki Reed (Rosalie) and Taylor Lautner (Jacob). They had new details to reveal about the multiple scenes they just shot — as well as their rapidly accelerating level of fame building up to the movie's November 21 release.

What are we allowed to say?" Reed wondered aloud, teasing us while she thought back to the top-secret shoot. "I think all we can say is, there were a few days when there were some weather issues [during the original shoot earlier this year] and some time issues, and a few things that could have been done better. And they were."
To get an idea of the extreme Portland weather to which Reed referred, look no further than this clip MTV captured on the "Twilight" set. That popping noise you hear is golf-ball-size hail pounding against the roof of the greenhouse in which they were filming.
"There were a lot of additional scenes," Reed explained. "I think when they saw the film, I mean this is kind of a guess, but I think that they realized that it could use a little bit more of the old element, so I think the flashbacks focused on that."
Reed seemed to think they needed to keep this intel a secret, but Robert Pattinson (Edward), Peter Facinelli (Carlisle) and Kellan Lutz (Emmett) have already revealed that the new shoots included a scene establishing the history of the Cullens. To show when Carlisle and his family made a treaty with the Quileute Indian tribe, the actors dressed in pegged pants and old-timey caps. Facinelli even had to speak to the tribe leaders in their language.
"I'm a vampire, so I'm in the flashbacks," Reed said of the scene. "But this one here [pointing to Stewart] is still — how old is Bella — 16, 17?"
"She's 17," Stewart said.
"Yeah," Reed continued, "so she's in modern time only."
Sure enough, some scenes did take place in modern time, and Stewart was called back for those, including a reworking (with better weather) of Edward and Bella's encounter in the meadow.
And though weeks ago, Lautner told MTV News that they were adding him to the prom sequence, he decided he had to be vague about it this time around.
"[The new scenes are] just a little backstory," Lautner said. "I'm not sure if I can say what I did, or I might not be walking tomorrow! It definitely improved the movie. They did three scenes, and it really has an impact on the film.
"Kristen was in [a scene] with me. Rob was. It was a fun scene," he added. "It was good to see everyone again, because I hadn't seen them in like three months. We reunited, and it was a lot of fun."
The 17-year-old actor also marveled over the fact that the "Twilight" movie has become so big that simple reshoots could capture the attention of devoted fans all over the world.
"The fans are just — well, it's always been insane, so I don't know if I can tell if it's gotten bigger," he laughed. "Everywhere you go there are 'Twilight' fans. It's amazing. We show up at the VMAs and step out of our car, and there are 'Twilight' fans surrounding us like crazy! It's pretty insane how the fans are the driving force of this thing. And I'm really excited to be a part of it."

'Harry Potter' Gets Love From Robert Pattinson, Lupe Fiasco, Keira Knightley And More Celeb Fans

Harry Potter has his 10-year "birthday" this week, but it's not just the fantasy crowd that's celebrating (either with wizard-rock shows or readathons).
We checked in with a variety of musicians and actors (some from the films, some not) to see what they thought about the boy wizard and how he's impacted their lives. We thought we might get laughed at — after all, a lot of these folks were walking the red carpet at the VMAs and probably had something far more glamorous to attend to. But mention Harry Potter, and some people just light up.
Here are a few of them:
Keira Knightley: "I've read all the books. I haven't seen the films, except the first one. What's the alley where they get the wands from? [Diagon Alley.] That's an amazing image. Harry, he's pretty cool. He's got a good scar."
Jeremy Davis (Paramore): "Hell, yeah, I love 'Harry Potter'! I feel like 'Harry Potter,' the books and the movies, went above and beyond any other series. It would be a tough series to compete with. I would hate to try to compete against it."
Kellan Lutz ("Twilight"): "I love 'Harry Potter.' I actually wanted 'Harry Potter' as competition for 'Twilight,' because you'd be seeing the wizard side of fantasy and then jumping into the vampire life. Everyone I talk to is so obsessed with it. I always wished I had powers. I always wished I had a stick and a broom! It's a great story. It's so well-written. I think 'Harry Potter' hit everything. It set the precedent, that peak of Mount Everest, and we all want to climb that mountain. I just wish there were as many books to make movies of in 'Twilight' as there are in 'Harry Potter.' "
Robert Pattinson (Cedric in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," Edward in "Twilight"): "Does it make me a traitor? 'Harry Potter' was what made me become an actor. I credit 'Harry Potter' with everything else that's come since for me. I didn't know what I was doing before that. I hadn't read the books before doing the movie, so at first I read it just as an acting exercise. But I really enjoyed it! But I think Edward would kick Cedric's ass, to be honest."
Lupe Fiasco: "I'm a spectator of the entire phenomenon, you know what I'm saying? The entire phenomenon inspires me. I love Harry Potter [he points to his own specs] because of the glasses."
Kaycee Stroh ("High School Musical"): "The character I relate to the most is Hermione, because she's a bit of a spitfire and she always saves the day. I step into her shoes when necessary. I love her and relate to her. I think the series has a wonderful message about how every kid has that struggle of not fitting in, and it's very inspiring to realize through the hero of the story that that's not all that matters. The reason I love it is because it teaches us to use our imagination and our hearts. We're never too old to have fun."
Paul Wall: "The first two movies were a little too childish, but as Harry grew up, as he's growing up, he's getting a little more gangsta. It's getting a little more intense and action-packed, so I like it even more now. I don't have a favorite character, and if I did have a favorite, my wife and my sister [who are even bigger fans] would roast me for that."
Jonathan Davis (Korn): "I just like the whole 'Harry Potter' vibe — about a kid becoming a magician, going to wizarding school. I think the movies and the books, everything I've seen, is really cool. I definitely like Harry, because he's the underdog. He's always getting picked on. He's always down and out, but he just comes back, and I think that's cool. And it's pissed off a bunch of Christian people, and that made it even better for me."
Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort in the "Harry Potter" films): "I think the great thing about 'Harry Potter' is that J.K. Rowling has created a myth for our time. I know it sounds cliché, but to keep reinventing the dynamic between good and evil in an accessible and dramatic way is fantastic. I think the high-octane drama of those movies is great for keeping filmmaking alive. There's an energy and an inventiveness and an originality to what she's done."
Shirley Manson: "I have two connections with 'Harry Potter.' One is that J.K. Rowling came from my city, Edinburgh. But more importantly, my dog, my rescue dog, is named after a character, a kind of being, in 'Harry Potter': Veela."
Marcia Gay Harden: "[My 10-year-old daughter] Eulala has read all seven books, and this past year, she asked me to read them with her, because her whole world is 'Harry Potter.' For her birthday, she wants a wand, a crystal ball, a potion-making kit, that's all she wants — not any 'Hannah Montana.' So I read it, and it's brilliant. Each chapter, J.K. Rowling leaves a breadcrumb, and you have to read on. You can't stop! It's affected our lives on so many levels, from reading together to playtime — a lot of playtime is about 'Harry Potter' — to other books and wondering if the writing will be as good or the imagery as great. Rowling says, 'Jump on and go on this ride,' and it's fantastic. I would have loved to be Professor McGonagall. Eulala is Hermione. It's another way of looking at the world, which I really love."
Autumn Reeser ("American Mall"): "I had a 'Harry Potter' lunchbox — I kept art supplies in it. The kids who I went to elementary school with would say I'm a Hermione. I was a little bit of a know-it-all. I just liked school, which isn't always cool. I discovered that in junior high. But I think 'Harry Potter' reminds me of my childhood, of that fantastical time childhood is. I would have liked to go to Hogwarts. I would have had wizard parties. There is actually a whole book on how to throw wizard parties, and I considered doing that, you know, making food that looks like funny things like frogs. Your guests come as wizards. I would probably have to invite 10-year-olds and not my actual friends."
Verne Troyer: "I was actually in the first 'Harry Potter' film, and it was fun, but the only thing was, I had to go through over five hours of makeup. A new 'Harry Potter' film is going to be coming out soon, and they have my character [Griphook] coming back, but they somehow didn't call me and have me be a part of it. What's up with that?"

'Twilight' Tuesday: Kellan Lutz Recalls How He Almost Wasn't Cast As Belligerent 'Goofball' Emmett

Like his character, the actor can't wait to sink his teeth into a good fight।

PORTLAND, Oregon — When it comes to "Twilight" Tuesday here at MTV, we try to operate on one simple motto: Ask, and ye shall receive.
In virtually every article we've written covering the upcoming "Twilight" movie, there's one comment we can count on receiving: "Give us more Kellan Lutz!" And although the 23-year-old actor isn't a household name, a quick search of sites like Kellmett Happens and the Twilight Lexicon Forum show the type of love that has had Twilighters sending gift baskets to Lutz ever since he landed the role of burly teddy bear Emmett Cullen. (Lutz expresses his genuine appreciation of enthusiastic "Twilight" fans in the MTV Movies blog.)
As you'll see from this on-set interview with MTV, Lutz (who's also on the new "90210" this fall) is an endearingly normal guy who nevertheless takes his acting — and Stephenie Meyer's vampire series — very seriously. As he reveals a love for "Bill & Ted," the missing "Twilight" moment he's eager to shoot and the circumstances that nearly made him miss the gig, something tells us the Twilighters will suck this up like fresh blood.
MTV: Give us your take on Emmett.
Kellan Lutz: All right, Emmett is the coolest guy of them all, that's pretty much it. [Laughs.] No, he's the protector; he's like the doorman for the family. He's really just there to protect and lighten everything up that Rosalie throws at the family. She's the emotional letdown; she really brings everyone down. Carlisle will be like, "Emmett, take care of her." He's really just the protector, the goofball. He's there to make them laugh, and he's there to have a good time.
MTV: And at the same time, you seem to have an animal ferocity, especially in that garage scene we watched you shoot.
Lutz: Yeah, in the garage scene, that's really just to kick some butt. Jasper and myself, we're the fighters. He was a general in his day, and Emmett is a fighter, so it's really a thrill to go hunting these vampires. He's really excited; he's one to just go tear something apart.
MTV: What's the one scene you shot that you're most eager to see up on the big screen?

Lutz: Well, I did the stunt work in the baseball scene, where they pulled me up pretty high on a harness and had me freefall, catch a ball and throw it back in. We did that, gosh, 20 times. I'm in these crappy shoes, and my ankles are killing me, but it was a cool shot, so it was worth it to get.
MTV: Has director Catherine Hardwicke taken on a "den mother" persona with all you guys?
Lutz: Catherine is extremely cool. She's so laid-back, and I think that's one of the cool things we all enjoy. She gives us a lot of freedom. Yes, she tells us where to go and end up. But she really allows us [to develop ourselves]. She tells me, "All right, go be crazy. Go have fun, go put energy in the scene." She lets us do our thing and just be our characters.
MTV: Which scene from the sequels are you dying to shoot?
Lutz: The third book, where we get to annihilate everyone — that's what I can't wait to do. Hopefully, we get to a third movie, where Jasper and I kick everyone's butt. ... I focus mainly on the Emmett stuff.
MTV: So in each movie, you have a favorite Emmett scene?
Lutz: Yeah. [Laughs.] That's pretty much how it is; the three coolest scenes with Emmett are the coolest for me. ... I wish I was in every scene, to be part of every moment.
MTV: What's the scene in "New Moon" you're most eager to shoot?
Lutz: The one in the second book is when Bella hurts herself, and I make fun of her. That will be awesome to do.
MTV: But otherwise, you're big on the carnage, huh?
Lutz: Yes. I mean, that's all Emmett is really there for. In a way, he's an important character in the book, and without him, it wouldn't tie the family in as much as he does. If you left anyone out, [the Cullens] wouldn't be complete, in a way. ... But Emmett is there to crack jokes and beat someone up.
MTV: What will the special effects look like in these big action scenes?
Lutz: There are no special effects, they hire me to do everything. [Laughs.] No, I wish. The special effects are going to be cool. We wear contacts, which bug the hell out of me. I've never worn contacts, but they're saving a lot of time and effort, in that they won't have to special-effect [our vampire eyes]. But as far as all the other stuff, the flying and the fight sequence stuff? It's going to be cool, but it's PG-13, so not so much blood and gore.
MTV: The other day I interviewed Keanu Reeves, and people are still asking him about "Bill & Ted," 20 years later. If "Twilight" is as big a hit as some people think it's going to be, are you prepared for such long-term fanaticism?
Lutz: That's brilliance! "Bill & Ted" I love. To be honest, I have no idea what's going to come of this. If it's going to be a cult-like following, where we all have to move to Hawaii or something, that's cool. I'm up for it. It's not going to change me in any way. Bring it on. It's going to be cool to see.
MTV: Is there anything that you are into, pop-culture-wise?
Lutz: I love "Battlestar Galactica." I'm obsessed with that show; it's brilliant. I just love everything about space. But I'm not really hard-core into "Star Wars" or "Star Trek," just "Battlestar Galactica." That's my show.
MTV: What has been the hardest part about shooting the movie?
Lutz: Probably working six-day shoots, waking up at 4, wrapping at 10 and waking up at 4 again. I don't sleep much. But to come home and not have more than three hours of sleep, because I just can't sleep after being on the set, that's tough. As far as shooting on set, it's the weather. ... Some days, it will hail out of the blue, and then snow, and then hail and then rain, and we're like, "Continuity! The girls can't get their hair wet!" So then we've got to stop and shoot the next day.
MTV: Are you the type of actor who keeps a copy of the book with you on set, or just the script?
Lutz: What we're doing is the script, and a lot of the stuff is somewhat different than the book. ... I have the book at home, but I bring the script to set.
MTV: Cutting a 500-page book into a 120-page script is tough, and inevitably some things have to be cut. Is there any chopped-out scene or line involving Emmett that you're like: "Damn, I loved that part."
Lutz: Stephenie Meyer had an outtake that she took out of the book, and it's labeled "Emmett and the Bear," which I read on her Web site. I thought it was brilliant, and I really wish it were in the book. It's about the relationship development between Edward and Emmett, and I really wish we could have shown that on camera.
MTV: When you auditioned, were you always going out for the part of Emmett?
Lutz: The audition for this was actually a pretty funny story. I was away in Africa, shooting a miniseries for HBO called "Generation Kill." We were there for seven months, and I believe the script came out in October, while I was over there, and I didn't finish [in Africa] until December. I remember my team sending me out for Edward, because, obviously, he's the lead. Which is funny, because Emmett I could book in a heartbeat.
MTV: Why do you think so?
Lutz: That's me, day in and day out. I love life, and yet I love beating people up. [Laughs.] I missed that [Emmett] audition while I was over there. It's tough putting yourself on tape while your head is shaved. So, I was bummed [because] I really loved Emmett, and when I came back, the role of Emmett was already cast. But just my luck, the guy for Emmett fell through, and they opened it up one day on a Monday. I went in on Tuesday and auditioned with, like, 10 other guys, and Catherine wanted to see me! So she flew me out to Oregon the next day, I auditioned for her, and she gave it to me. I'm very lucky.
MTV: Wow! Now you've become one of these great Lou Gehrig-subbing-for-Wally-Pipp-like stories.

Perry Farrell & Paramore Added To ‘Twilight’ Soundtrack

Slowly but surely we’re finding out which bands will be included in the soundtrack to the Twilight movie starring Kristen Stewart as Bella and Robert Pattinson as Edward.
Perry Farrell told NY Mag that he’s writing a “crucial song” for Twilight, tentatively titled “Going All The Way (Into the Twilight),” which will be a solo project for him. The former Jane’s Addiction frontman didn’t go into specifics on what the song would be about or who would be performing on it.
In other news, MTV reports that the band Paramore will have two new songs — once called “Decode, which is about Bella and Edward’s love affair; the other still-untitled — on the film’s soundtrack, which will be released on November 4. (Some of you might remember Paramore as the band at the MTV VMA’s that Robert Pattinson was trying to introduce when the show’s host Russell Brand interrupted him.)
Paramore’s singer/frontwomen Hayley Williams, a self-professed Twilight devotee, talked a bit about her inspiration for “Decode.”
“I chose the title ‘Decode’ because the song is about the building tension, awkwardness, anger and confusion between Bella and Edward,” she said. “Bella is the only mind Edward can’t read, and I feel like that’s a big part of the first book and one of the obstacles for them to overcome. It’s one added tension that makes the story even better.”
Back in July at SDCC, the film’s director Catherine Hardwicke announced that Muse (Twilight author Stephenie Meyer’s favorite band) would contribute a song, while star Robert Pattinson would add two of his own compositions।

I’m not a fan of paramore, but I’m glad that the soundtrack is getting such big names. I’m not sure how the punk thing will work in the movie, but i have faith in the gal that is picking the music.
I’m actually quite surprised that Perry farrell is involved. That is awesome, though i know some of the younger fans most likely have no idea whom he is. I like Janes addiction, and Perry great talent, I can totally see him pulling off something dark. This is going to be interesting. one thought though…
Where’s all the INDIE MUSIC?!! I want some lesser known bands on this soundtrack. I’m not a fan of all this mainstream stuff.

Parts of the local high school were condemned. Families started to drift away.Until an unlikely cast of vampires breathed new life into the town."I fell in love with it," says 18-year-old Samantha Cogar, who dragged her grandparents on a 2,500 mile roadtrip to Forks from Louisville, Ky., earlier this summer. "I can't wait to go back."Cogar is one of thousands of visitors who have flocked to Forks in response to "Twilight," the hottest series to hit shelves since "Harry Potter." Set in Forks, on the gritty edge of the Olympic Mountain Range, the books have captured the hearts of readers around the world.In a town framed by towering Douglas fir, hemlock and spruce and the occasional western red cedar, where rough, blue collar edges are tangible, the unexpected attention seems to be a second chance for the economy. Inspired by a world of make-believe, "Twilight" fans are bringing the town back to life.Four years ago, Author Stephenie Meyer introduced the world to Bella Swan, a 17-year-old who moves to Forks and is torn between the love of classmate Edward Cullen and best friend Jacob Black. But before long, she realizes something isn't right: Edward is a vampire and Jacob, a werewolf.Readers were hooked, and three more "Twilight" books followed. A place where success is measured in sweat and four-wheel drive.But Forks was quick to embrace the frenzied fans.Forks' "Twilight"-inspired turn has been nothing short of magical, Marcia Bingham, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, says."We've probably had more than 100 people a day," says Bingham, who has eagerly watched as van after van of giddy readers — mostly female — pull up in front of the town's visitors center.For many fans, the line where reality ends and imagination begins is starting to blur, says Michael Gurling, who caught inspiration from the tourism boom and started his own Twilight Tours.After enlisting a few locals, he asked for help in picking out houses that could serve as stand-ins for the book's famous Forks' stops: Bella and Edward's houses, a field where vampires play baseball. Other locations, such as the police station, where Bella's father works, and the hospital, where Edward's father is a doctor, play their own parts. They chipped in, providing cruisers near which fans may take pictures and reserving a spot for "Dr. Cullen" in the parking lot."The most popular spot is probably the beach, in LaPush, where Bella finds out the truth about Edward," says Gurling.On a recent Friday, Gurling's van headed out of the visitor's center parking lot — packed, as it is most every weekend, with teenage girls. Outside the stand-in for Edward's house, a sign on the door says "Cullens" are volunteering a blood drive."It's not quite how I thought it would be," says Yena Hu, a University of Washington sophomore who made the four-hour trek from Seattle to visit. "They're always talking about all the windows — and in the book, the house is on the water."But it's surprising how much Meyer did get right, considering she'd never been to Forks when she wrote the first book. A quick Internet search revealed Forks was one of the rainiest places in the world, and from her home in Arizona, the stay-at-home mom began rewriting history.While locals are accepting of their newfound fame, they're all too aware of the mania that is continuing to grow.Almost everyone has a "Twilight" story: the teen who dropped his library card, only to discover Twilighters had found it and kept it; the cheerleader who has out-of-town mothers stop her on the street offering cash for her uniform; the Quileute native, who heads to LaPush to chop wood and sees giddy teenagers snatching up driftwood as souvenirs.Jessica Hartman, an 18-year-old who works at the town's pharmacy says "Twilight" has more than doubled profits for the corner store.Flipping through a guest book for Twilighters, the recent Forks High School grad smiles as she touches signatures from around the globe — Europe, Asia, South America. They're all here, recorded in the tattered pages that spell out the town's fame.Spurred by the boost in tourism and influx of money, are businesses eagerly trying to cash in on the craze.Wander down the town's main drag and you'll see "We Love Edward and Bella" signs in store windows and a Forks' Speedway sign welcoming "Vampires and Racers."Restaurants have started offering Twilight-themed options: Subway's "Twilight Special" which oozes marinara and the ever popular Bella Burger at local hangout Sully's Drive-in, which comes with special sauce and pineapple.Stacks of Twilight T-shirts sit behind almost every counter in town.At Sully's, 32-year-old Eleanor Currit waves a pair of plastic vampire teeth in the air — a standard side for any customer who orders the Bella burger."When I go back to my book club, I'm definitely going to have bragging rights," she says. "The women in my group are honestly crazy about these books."Currit, a stay-at-home-mom with a master's degree in English, says being in Forks is like opening a page of the book and jumping in."This town just has a pretty primal way about it," she said. "It's really a mysterious beauty."While the fourth and final "Twilight" book was released earlier this summer, Gurling, a former National Park Guide, says he thinks the release of the "Twilight" movie, set for early November, will only generate more attention for Forks.And while some long for quieter days, others say "Twilight" might have been what this town needed."It seems like we're Twilighting all the time," says Charlene Cross, the town's florist. "But at the end of the day, it makes you feel like we're part of something bigger — and I think that makes it worth it."

Move Over Harry: 'Twilight' Movie Takes Advantage of HP-VI Postponement

The decision that has Harry Potter fans in mourning--Warner Bros. Postponing the movie release of "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" until July 2009--turns out to be a boon for Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" fans.

"Twilight," the movie, was moved up three weeks and now releases on November 21st (Woohoo!) and now Bella and Edward devotees can get their on-screen fix earlier than originally planned.

Stephenie Meyer, always the sweetheart and diplomat, had this to say about the decision to supplant Twilight for HP:

"So, many of you have heard that the release of the sixth Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, has been moved from this Thanksgiving to next summer. First and foremost, please know that this schedule change has absolutely nothing to do with Twilight, me, or Summit Films (so enough with the imdb death wishes, okay?). This is Warner Bros. decision, and it was not motivated by anything Twilight-related. Now for the good news! Though we're all sad to have to wait for Harry Potter, this open spot at the theater creates a cool opportunity. The good people at Summit were thrilled to let me know that now Twilight fans are going to get their movie three weeks earlier than scheduled. That's right--Twilight will be released in theaters November 21st! Let the merry-making commence!"

In the meantime, perhaps Twilight fans can keep themselves fed on HBO's "True Blood" series, whose star vampire is turning out to have a similar, old-fashioned approach to romance as our beloved Edward Cullen in the "Twilight Series।"

Paramore Recording Soundtrack For Twilight MOVIE

Paramore are recording a new movie soundtrack for forthcoming film 'Twilight'.
Singer Hayley Williams revealed the news, as she explains on her blog: "We are back home. Recording again for a possible shot at the 'Twilight' soundtrack. The rumours are a little less than true but a little more than a lie."
Paramore are also shaking off those claims that the group were to split, as Hayley confirmed the band are working on new material for their next album:
"It's crazy to me that we've never actually recorded anything but demos in our hometown. It's nice to "work" from home. if you can even consider this work."

'Twilight' New Scenes Visualizing the Cullens' Back Story

Providing more details to the extra scenes shot a while back, "Twilight" stars Robert Pattinson and Kellan Lutz open up to MTV News and confirm that the reshoots are indeed flashbacks। At 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, they noted that the scenes will help to explain the background story of the Cullen family।

About it, Pattison revealed, "The reshoots are basically flashbacks that can go [along with] big voiceovers. Well, not voiceovers, but big scenes that give the exposition and back story of the Cullens." Giving out more, Lutz confessed that it is the visualization of the old peace treaty made by a family of vampires and the Quileute Indian tribe saying, "It's more about the treaty, and really summarizing what that really is."

Lutz who portrays Emmett Cullen further pointed out the difference of the novel and the movie because of the reshoots. He confessed that instead of showing Bella listening to Quileute Jacob about the peace treaty, the new scenes will provide viewers with the actual treaty footage insisting, "we are actually showing the scenes from back in the day...what actually went on. That's so when it's mentioned, people actually have a sense and a vision of really what it was about and whose territory was where."

Aside from filming the new footages, redo was also done for meadow scene, the kiss in Bella's bedroom and Edward Cullen's performance of "Bella's Lullaby" in the Cullen house. On the Lullaby's reshot, Pattison let out that his composition has to be replaced saying, "We reshot the 'Bella's Lullaby' scene with a different piece of music."

"I heard my original one the other day, and I really liked it. I was kind of depressed afterwards, but I like the new one as well. The new one I didn't write; the composer Carter Burwell did it. The new one fits in with the rest of the score, whereas my one was completely random, so unless you want a five-minute scene of just

me playing the piano, I guess it's kind of irrelevant."

A feature film adaptation to Stephenie Meyer's bestselling novel of the same name, "Twilight" resolves around seventeen-year-old Isabella 'Bella' Swan, a newcomer to the small town of Forks, Washington, and her mysterious classmate, Edward Cullen, who later she finds out to be a 108-year-old vampire. SANTA MONICA, California — When Stephenie Meyer originally conceived of her "Twilight" universe, it's highly unlikely that she was inspired by spider monkeys, Channing Tatum and the cowboys from "Brokeback Mountain." But for this week's "Twilight" Tuesday, screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg stopped by the MTV News offices to remind us of the personality quirks that have crept into the Cullens — and the collaborative process necessary for turning a best-selling novel into a hit Hollywood movie.
The veteran writer/producer behind hits both twisted ("Dexter") and teen-friendly ("The O.C.," "Step Up"), Rosenberg comes across in person as a smart, eager-to-please writer who is genuinely proud to have earned the Meyer seal of approval. In this exclusive interview about her screenplay for the film that finally hits theaters November 21 (as if you needed reminding), Rosenberg gave us a revealing peek at several new scenes and characters, the film's "forward-thinking" ending, and the surprising reasons why we'll soon be seeing an Edward who wishes he knew how to quit Bella. MTV: The "Twilight" fanbase is beloved for their enthusiasm. What kind of craziness have you witnessed since you took on the gig?
Melissa Rosenberg: I went to my niece's bat mitzvah recently out in Tucson [Arizona]. It was a very small ceremony and a very small group of people. She's 13, and she had a couple of her friends there ... and she mentioned to them, "Oh, this is my Aunt Melissa and she wrote 'Twilight.' " Suddenly I had these just fantastic girls [saying], "Oh my God!" They were just thrilled and asked for my autograph on a napkin!
MTV: What kind of questions did they have?
Rosenberg: Well, I don't think that they really understood what a screenwriter does, and I tried to explain it. They were like, "Didn't you just shoot the book?" And I said, "No, well, I had to make scenes up," but they didn't care. My name and "Twilight" were in the same sentence, so they had to have an autograph.
MTV: I look at your filmography, and obviously the two things that jump out are "Step Up" and the serial-killer drama "Dexter." Where does "Twilight" fit into these very diverse universes?
Rosenberg: "Twilight" is right in the middle of "Step Up" and "Dexter." It has the romance and the relationship of "Step Up" and the desire that's in "Step Up," but it also has the darkness and eeriness of "Dexter." ... "Dexter" really helped a lot for me — having been in a fairly dark place with "Dexter," it's easy to translate over. But the romance of "Twilight" is pure.
MTV: So Edward's not going to be chopping up bodies and keeping them in his fridge?
Rosenberg: [Laughs.] No, no. Edward's not a serial killer.
MTV: But Dexter does similarly deal with having a hunger — trying to suppress it at times but giving into it when he needs that power.
Rosenberg: Absolutely. Dexter has what he calls a "dark passenger." It's this urge, this need, this hunger for blood — and so does Edward. Edward just has a better hold on it. [Laughs.] Edward can rein it in more. What's also true is that both Dexter and Edward are constantly exploring issues of humanity and what it is to be human and envying humans. Dexter is very much like an alien set on the planet to learn about humanity, because he himself is disassociated and doesn't have the normal human experiences. He has made a life of studying humans so he can pass as a human. Well, so is Edward. Edward is trying to pass as a human, and it's been so long [since] he's been a human that he's constantly marveling at it.
MTV: I would think the greatest challenge for you was to portray a romance that "Twilight" fans consider to be so powerful and epic. Where did you go for inspiration?
Rosenberg: Well, "Romeo and Juliet" is an obvious comparison. I discovered [after reading "Twilight" that Meyer] uses "Romeo and Juliet" quite heavily in "New Moon." And this is going to sound a little crazy, but "Brokeback Mountain" was a great model of forbidden love.
MTV: So when it came time to portray the Edward/Bella romance, you thought about Heath and Jake?
Rosenberg: Well, "Brokeback Mountain" for two reasons: One, the short story [that was the basis] for "Brokeback Mountain" is beautiful, pure, very small — 20 or 40 pages — and the writers of "Brokeback Mountain" [the movie] would take one sentence, one four-word sentence, and it would become a story line. It would become a character. It was such a beautiful adaptation. I learned a great deal from reading that book and then watching the movie. It taught me a lot about adapting. But I had the opposite challenge with "Twilight" than they had with "Brokeback" — with "Brokeback," they had to let it grow and breathe. I had to condense a great deal. For instance, with the James character and the evil vampires — taking what is really only the last 25 percent of the [novel] and bringing it forward. There were a couple moments like that where you go, "OK, wait a minute, [Meyer] is just suggesting this. But let's let it play."
MTV: But as far as the Edward/Bella romance is concerned, you see similarities to the "Brokeback" relationship?
Rosenberg: Yeah, it was just so poignant, and the forbidden-love element, that you have this deep yearning and passion and yet you have to keep it secret — to want to be with each other and to have to stay away on some level. So "Brokeback," for me, was a great model for how to structure the romance in the story.
MTV: Can you give us an example of something that wasn't in the book but you wanted to work into the script?
Rosenberg: Initially, I thought the world of the book is very much in the Pacific Northwest. It's a very dense, misty, wet area, very eerie and really evocative of a mood. So I thought, "Well, let's just start the movie right there. Let's begin in this world." But then [I met with] Stephenie, and she started talking about Scottsdale [Arizona], which is where she lives and where she grew up. You're surrounded by these very perfect, very beautiful, very wealthy people, and when you're just a normal girl, you feel inadequate in comparison. That's such a cornerstone in her character. ... When Stephenie talked about being in Scottsdale and being raised there, and her feelings of never quite measuring up to these gorgeous, blond, usually plastic-surgery people, she really captured for me the essence of Bella. So we decided that we absolutely had to start with Bella in Scottsdale. This is where we first meet her and see her next to the gorgeous neighbor. And to see her tripping off a stair right away established that character of Bella as that sort of awkward, very normal teenage girl, and [the audience will] fall in love with her for that.
MTV: Wow, very different from the novel. Now, having read "Twilight," we'd also expect Kristen Stewart to spend quite a bit of time in the voice-over booth. Did your script give Bella more or less narrative duties?
Rosenberg: Actually, there's not a lot of voice-over. ... As we went forward, we realized we needed less, and we started pulling out voice-over. The challenge of adapting the book is indeed that it is very internal. ... It was all about getting those conversations that are in her head, getting them out or seeing them. For instance, Bella's feeling awkward about dance — there's a lot of conversation about that, a lot of her talking about how awkward she feels. But to be able to see that in a scene in which Edward asks her to dance and she refuses, I [needed] to actually get that out there and say it.
MTV: The Cullens are described in the novels as being godlike. Is that hard to write?
Rosenberg: Well, we wanted to [depict] Edward's agility and strength, so we created scenes in which he grabs Bella and jumps out a window or he catches an apple that rolls off the table and hands it back to her. [I was] trying to find ways in which to show the different Cullens' abilities and strengths.
MTV: Do we learn more about the evil vampires in the film?
Rosenberg: The evil vampires: James, Victoria and Laurent. They show up in the last quarter of the book, but they've been around. Where were they before they got there? So Stephenie handed me these great villains, and I just took them and peppered them in. ... We learn about James and Victoria's relationship a little bit more, because they are soul mates, which becomes important later on. The objective was to fill them out. They're hungry. Their motivation is they're hungry and they like blood, and they like Bella's blood in particular. It smells very good. James' motivation, of course, is he loves the challenge and is presented with the perfect challenge. That's something Stephenie created, and I absolutely ran with it.
MTV: How do you get into the heads of the various characters?
Rosenberg: The fun of writing is that, in my mind, I get to play Charlie, I get to play Renee, I get to play Bella and Eric and all of them — I get to be that 17-year-old kid like Eric, who is trying to be that mover and shaker of the group. Eric is a compilation of a couple of different human characters. We had to cut down on some of the characters, and we didn't want to cut down on any of the Cullens, so we did have to combine a couple of the human characters. We kind of reinvented him a little bit and made him this sort of very quippy, funny character.
MTV: Which characters does he combine?
Rosenberg: I can't really say. The script and the book have become one to me. I can't remember where the book begins and where the script ends.
MTV: But Eric is a school friend with Bella?
Rosenberg: Yeah, there is actually a character in the book whose name is Eric. Jessica is a combination of Jessica and Lauren. Angela is still Angela, and Mike Newton is still Mike Newton, and Eric combines a couple of the human kids. ... Eric, he was a very smart, very funny guy, and we made him the head of the school newspaper and Angela the photographer. There's a lot of conversations you can have because of that. You can get how shy and awkward Bella is and how uncomfortable she is when Eric and Angela want to interview her for the newspaper.
MTV: Are there any lines of dialogue that make you particularly proud?
Rosenberg: Well, I can tell you this: "Spider monkey," I believe, comes from Rob Pattinson. I didn't actually write "spider monkey."
MTV: Really? Because the fans already love that line in the clips we've seen when Edward tells Bella, "You better hold on tight, spider monkey!"
Rosenberg: That was an improv.
MTV: So is that one of the things where a screenwriter sees the movie and says, "Sweet improv!" Or do you go, "He ruined my script! 'Spider monkey' is not accurate!"
Rosenberg: [Laughs.] Well, what I should say is, "I came up with spider monkey on my own. I wrote that."
MTV: Someday that could be the new "This is the beginning of a beautiful friendship" — or something like that.
Rosenberg: Exactly.
MTV: Does the "Twilight" movie end cleanly, or does it hint that there's more to come?
Rosenberg: There's a forward-thinking moment in the end. I shouldn't tell you what it is, though.
MTV: Well, we don't want to ruin the ending, we just want to know if there's something juicy in there.

'Twilight' Stars Robert Pattinson, Kellan Lutz Describe New Flashback Scenes

When news first broke that "Twilight" stars were reshooting scenes of the movie, some worried it was a sign that the vampire flick was in trouble. Kellan Lutz, Peter Facinelli and Taylor Lautner assured MTV News, however, that the new scenes were a good thing.

That, of course, only raised more questions about what the new footage would be. Thankfully, when we caught up with Lutz and Robert Pattinson at the VMAs, they gave us a few more morsels about what has changed about the movie, due out on November 21.

"The reshoots are basically flashbacks that can go [along with] big voiceovers," Pattinson (Edward Cullen) said. "Well, not voiceovers, but big scenes that give the exposition and back story of the Cullens."

"It's more about the treaty, and really summarizing what that really is," Lutz, who plays Edward's brother Emmett, explained. "And showing it — showing versus telling."

In the novel, 17-year-old Bella learns of an old peace treaty that was made between a family of vampires and the Quileute Indian tribe, in which the vampires have agreed not to feed on humans (or convert any more vampires) in exchange for being allowed to live peacefully in Forks, Washington. Instead of just showing Bella listening as young Quileute Jacob tells her the story, Lutz said, "we are actually showing the scenes from back in the day ... what actually went on.

"That's so when it's mentioned, people actually have a sense and a vision of really what it was about," Lutz added, "and whose territory was where."

That meant having the actors dress up in newsboy hats, jodhpurs, ties, vests and boots, to give it a period feel. "The wardrobe was amazing," Lutz said. "I loved everything we wore."

Lutz said the new scenes flesh out parts of the novel that had to be condensed for the screen adaptation. "You can't make a movie that's three hours long to do the book justice," he said. "You have to simplify it. So the things we did add, it kind of summarized like 60 pages of material within three. And I think, for the people who haven't read the book — for the 1 percent of you out there, come on, you got to get the book — I think it's really going to help them understand it as a movie."

In addition to the flashback and a scene that includes Jacob in the prom (as he is in the book), some existing footage also had to be reshot for the movie. They redid the meadow scene (making Edward's skin sparkle more in the sunlight), the kiss in Bella's bedroom and Edward's performance of "Bella's Lullaby" in the Cullen house. Despite what director Catherine Hardwicke hinted at Comic Con, the movie won't be using Pattinson's original composition.

"We reshot the 'Bella's Lullaby' scene with a different piece of music," Pattinson explained. "I heard my original one the other day, and I really liked it. I was kind of depressed afterwards, but I like the new one as well. The new one I didn't write; the composer Carter Burwell did it. The new one fits in with the rest of the score, whereas my one was completely random, so unless you want a five-minute scene of just me playing the piano, I guess it's kind of irrelevant."

Pattinson wasn't too upset, however, since Hardwicke has said she'll use two other tracks he wrote.

And there was one big bonus for all of the actors when they reunited on the set this time around: They got a glimpse of what it might be like to do the possible sequels. "Having all the cast together, it's one of those experiences you never want to end," Lutz said. "I hope it never does."

Book series starring a vampire enjoys worldwide popularity

Once upon a time, fans stood in line dressed in witch hats, wands, and painted-on, lightning-shaped scars to buy the new book in the "Harry Potter" series.
But on Aug. 2, fans crowded Borders for a different book -- "Breaking Dawn," the fourth and last installment of the "Twilight" series by Stephenie Meyer.
In the hours before the countdown and screaming began for the new book, fans took part in costume competitions. Sarah Amireh, 13, an eighth-grader at Kastner Intermediate School, took second place in her werewolf costume, while her sister, Dana, took first place as Alice, a character from the books.
Sarah admitted that she was a big fan, despite her aversion to reading: "I never read, but after I read the first chapter, I was hooked. I couldn't put the book down."
The book release was the first part of a national mania that will probably swell through the fall -- right up to the scheduled opening of the "Twilight" movie on Nov. 21.
Published in October 2005, "Twilight" was an immediate success. It was Publishers Weekly's Best Book of the Year, made the Teen People "Hot List" pick, and became a New York Times best-seller. Three years and three more books ("New Moon," "Eclipse" and "Breaking Dawn") have gone by since "Twilight's" publication, and Meyer's series has become increasingly popular, especially with its recent release of the last novel -- and the forthcoming movie release.
The plot of the "Twilight" series revolves around a normal teen girl, Bella Swan, and a not-so-normal vampire boy, Edward Cullen. As they fall in love, they create a whirlwind of chaos and trouble that includes evil vampires, more evil vampires, werewolves -- and, of course, a love triangle.
But with the somewhat-overdone plot about vampires, what's so alluring about the story that it can attract today's nonreading crowd?
For many, it's that forbidden dark romance, because love never gets old. Amanda Cochron, 26, wearing a "Mrs. Edward Cullen" shirt at the "Borders" unveiling, said, "I like it because it's like a romance novel." Kastner eighth-grader Reyna Vargez, 13, gave the series a perfect 10, for "the love."
And of course, no romance novel is complete without the dreamy and handsome hero. That man -- or vampire, rather -- would be Edward, whose trademark crooked smile is enough to make half the population swoon. As Ruby Okazaki, 40, waited excitedly with a group of friends for "Breaking Dawn," she admitted with a laugh, "I like Edward because he's perfect."
Others are attracted to the fantasy aspect of it. Sixteen-year-old Camelia Banea, an Edison High School student, says love of fantasy is what drew her to the book; "I'm obsessed with vampires, and I just fell in love with the story line," she said.
Yet, despite the fantasy theme, many readers feel that it's written in a style that keeps the plot realistic and believable. Girls feel that they can relate to Bella because the book is written from her perspective.
"I definitely can relate to Bella in the way Stephenie Meyer wrote it," said Sarah Taylor, 16, of Bakersfield. "She's just like us -- she has our flaws."
The last big fad to rock the world was "Harry Potter." What started as an idea J.K. Rowling had on a train one day eventually became "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" in 1997 -- and that begat six more books and branches into other industries.
The first movie, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," was released in November 2001, with more to follow. ("Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" is slated to reach screens in 2009, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" in 2010.) When chocolate frogs made their way into candy shops and Harry Potter clothes and toys became available, it was obvious that it had become more than just a book series.
The "Twilight" series is following in the footsteps of "Harry Potter." Hot Topic is the place to go to for Twilight shirts and hoodies, and a quick search online reveals gobs of Twilight merchandise. And, of course, the rule to any super-popular book is to ... make a movie!
Although many fans are excited to see the book "Twilight" come to life on the screen, others are wary.
"I'm not going to see the movie," said Mitchell Suet, a Fresno City College student. "It will ruin my perception of the characters."
Some are disappointed with the cast, especially with Robert Pattinson playing Edward. Corrie Williams, 13, a Computech eighth-grader, said, "They screwed up on Edward, considering that the actor has to be human."
And despite the "Twilight" series' growing popularity, not everyone is joining in on the fun. Some teens have no intention of ever reading the "Twilight" books.
Mohammad Khorsand, 17, a senior at Buchanan High, refuses to give the book a try. After hearing too many "fangirls" raving over Edward, he's lost all interest: "I've actually heard people compare real people to the Edward guy. We're being compared [to] a fictional character in our demeanor."
Well, imaginary boyfriends or not, "Twilight" has become a trend. And, as online fan sites show, "Twilight" is no longer an American fad, but a universal phenomenon.

Studios shift movie schedules after delay of Harry Potter film

In the Harry Potter stories, wizards play chess with life-size, animated pieces.

But when Warner Bros. pushed the release of the next film in the Potter franchise, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," from Nov. 21 to summer 2009, the studio set off a chess game of another sort that's being played out in Hollywood.

In the last few weeks, distributors have shifted several major fall releases -- including the animated 3-D comedy "Bolt," the vampire thriller "Twilight," the James Bond adventure "Quantum of Solace" and the epic romance "Australia" -- to new dates in November, hoping to take advantage of the box-office void created by Harry's departure.

November is one of the biggest months for movie ticket sales outside the summer popcorn season, and its three biggest openings ever were all Harry Potter movies, with weekend hauls ranging from $88 million to $103 million.

The chain reaction was set off Aug. 14 when Warner stunned Potter-heads around the globe with its announcement. The move was aimed at bulking up the studio's 2009 slate -- and thanks to this year's box-office success of "The Dark Knight," Warner can afford a breather.

Chuck Viane, Walt Disney Studios' president of domestic distribution, said he was lunching with other top executives at the Burbank company when the news broke. After checking that afternoon with the studio's computer animation department, which was wrapping up post-production on "Bolt," and theater chain bookers around the country, Disney within hours advanced the film to Nov. 21, the Friday before Thanksgiving, from Nov. 26.

"If someone is going to give you five extra days of great grosses, why not seize that opportunity?" Viane said.

Summit Entertainment, meanwhile, saw a chance to expand its holiday season run for "Twilight," which it believes could launch a lucrative, female-driven franchise based on the bestselling novels.

The next day, Aug. 15, even with "Bolt" having pounced on the Potter date, Summit moved "Twilight" to Nov. 21 from Dec. 12. "Bolt," the story of a TV star dog who thinks he has superpowers, is aimed at family audiences whereas "Twilight," a live-action PG-13 fantasy about a teenage girl who falls in love with a vampire, has a darker tone, so the films are likely to have little overlap.

"Harry Potter is a box-office force that everybody has to work around," said Rob Friedman, co-chairman and chief executive of Summit. "Once the Warner guys decided to move it into 2009, a big vacuum -- and a big opportunity -- was created."

Potter's move freed up plenty of business not only on its opening weekend but also over the post-Thanksgiving weekend, when it still would have been a formidable competitor.

Sony Pictures, which successfully rebooted the Bond franchise with "Casino Royale" on Nov. 17, 2006, also shook up the schedule in a bid to maximize holiday season business. The studio pushed "Quantum of Solace," the second film with Daniel Craig as the tuxedoed British secret agent, to Nov. 14 from Nov. 7.

Sony got closer to the mid-November period that had worked so well not only two years ago but also with several previous Bond films. Sony wanted to "stick with a winning formula," said Jeff Blake, the studio's chairman of marketing and distribution, without getting too far away from the film's locked-in, Oct. 31 launch date in Britain.

And two weeks ago, 20th Century Fox bumped "Australia," one of its key fall releases, to Nov. 26 from Nov. 14. Steering clear of Bond should help the old-fashioned, adult-skewing drama from director Baz Luhrmann attract moviegoers on its opening weekend.

A Fox spokesman says the studio was motivated by the absence of a certain young wizard. The busy holiday weekend is "truly befitting this Baz Luhrmann motion picture event," he said.

But one chess game leads to another. This week, Universal Pictures moved up one of its big-budget, effects-driven "tent poles," the creature spectacle "Land of the Lost," from July 17 -- the new Potter date -- to June 5. "Lost" may include lots of dinosaurs and fictional lizard-like things called "sleestaks," but the Potter franchise is next summer's 800-pound gorilla.

Gothic: The dark side of art

NEW YORK - Ghostly heads press against a wall of latex. A replica of a once grand mansion crumbles into decay. A solemn death mask stands sentinel behind glass. Skulls hang from a display case. "Gothic: Dark Glamour," the new exhibition at the Fashion Institute of Technology, focuses on the dark side: death, sexual fetishes, Satanism. It examines the ways in which those themes have been interpreted by fashion designers and is one of the most captivating exhibitions the museum has mounted in recent memory.
Curator Valerie Steele is something of an authority on fashion's shadowy corners. She's the author of several books that put obsessions such as high heels and corsets into historical and cultural context. She also appears to be prescient. She began work on this exhibition more than two years ago, and its opening last week coincides with a Gothic moment in popular culture. "True Blood," the new HBO vampire fable recently debuted, and the movie version of Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" vampire saga is scheduled to open in November. Design houses from Proenza Schouler to Max Azria titillated their audiences during New York's Fashion Week with allusions to harnesses and bondage.
Despite the culture's demand for tidy cause-and-effect relationships, interest in the dark side seems to rise and fall for no clear reason, Steele says. It had a peak in the 1970s for instance and declined in the 80s. But it is always there. A pessimistic economic, political or social outlook does not draw us more emphatically into the gloom. Nor does an optimistic vision of the future spark greater experimentation and a desire to walk the line between darkness and light. "Goth" is not especially political.

Steele defines Gothic as far more than the cliche of the disaffected teen-ager with dyed black hair, white makeup and Doc Martens boots. In the exhibition, which runs through Feb. 21, Steele goes back to its origins in literature, art and religion. She points to Gothic tales from authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, who toyed with terror, entrapment and claustrophobia. Vampires, of course, play an enormous role in the Gothic narrative because of their ability to defy death and their submission to their basest passions. The exhibit explores the influence of the Victorian tradition of mourning, in which widows dressed in black for a year. And finally, Steele emphasizes the Dark Ages, in which superstitions and sorcery took precedence over science and reason.
In the hands of fashion designers, those ideas inform garments that reflect the beauty in decay, the unsettling passion of death and the subversive interest in the macabre - from death masks to skulls, which have become as ubiquitous in fashion as polka dots and floral prints.
One of the designers most powerfully represented in the exhibition is Alexander McQueen, who has long expressed an interest in the lesser angels of the human spirit. He has created collections inspired by abandonment, hopelessness, lunacy and religious oppression. One of his most memorable presentations was inspired by the story of an ancestor who was executed for witchcraft. His video backdrop included sequences of grotesque decay, and his models wore dresses that were at once constricting and compelling. It was hard to turn away from his mannequins even as you were repelled by the cruel manner in which they seemed to have been treated.
For spring 2001, the backdrop for his collection was the holding area of an insane asylum, and he toyed with the idea that great creativity sometimes comes from a damaged mind. The exhibit includes a dress from this collection that was made, in part, from microscope slides dyed red.
There are examples of work from the designer Rick Owens, an American working in Paris. He defies the constraints of the human body, using fabric and intricate cutting techniques to transform sleeves into wings, collars into horns and jackets into protective shells. He plays with the idea of man as miscreant.
Owens is most closely connected to those teen-age Goths gathered in musty nightclubs who proclaim themselves outsiders. His vein of fashion is associated with identity, using attire not just to stand out but to stand apart. He has distilled teen-age angst into high fashion.
Fashion is tapping into the same tension that fuels the work of a director like Quentin Tarantino or that keeps adolescents hunched over violent video games. We like being horrified. The threat of death is both arousing and stunning.
The wall text for "Gothic: Dark Glamour" includes a quote from the work of the 19th-century Italian poet Giacomo Leopardi, suggesting that fashion, by its very nature, is part of the Gothic story line.
Fashion: "I am fashion, your sister."
Death: "My sister?"
Fashion: "Yes, don't you remember that both of us are daughters of decay?"
The fashion industry is in constant pursuit of youth, working zealously to help us avoid our own mortality. Yet at the same time, fashion is obsessed with destruction. It is constantly ripping apart our perceptions of identity. Telling us that certain assumptions and traditions are over and done. It is a marker of time, dying one season only to be reborn the next. It is a memento mori hanging in our closet.
"Gothic: Dark Glamour" celebrates those tensions - as well as the beauty hidden in the fears that haunt our dreams.

I devour books. It's actually a little scary the way I can obsessively read a novel, no matter how long, until I've read the last sentence on the last page. In the past, my family has had to pull me kicking and screaming out of the door to get me away from a good page-turner.I usually go in spurts. I will read a book a day for two or three months, then take a month-long break from all reading, except magazines and work. I also tend to find one genre of literature for a particular reading spurt.One summer I read all of Louis L'Amour's Western adventures. Another time I read only biographies, my favorite being the story of the famous Siamese twins Chang and Eng Bunker. I was fascinated by their Civil War histories as farmers in North Carolina.Most recently, I went on a mystery marathon. I read crime novels with police detective heroes and murder mysteries with reporter heroines who always seem to be in the thick of the action. I was just hitting the peak of my recent spurt, when my colleague Alex Cantatore changed my direction.He insisted that I read "Twilight," Book 1 of Stephanie Meyer's modern vampire saga that is sweeping the nation. At first I was hesitant to take his advice. "Isn't that story about TEENAGED vampires?" I asked. "Why would I want to read about teenagers?" (Of course a few years ago many were asking why they would want to read a fantasy novel about a boy named Harry Potter.)"You'll love it, I promise," Alex said. He was right. "Twilight" is mesmerizing. The characters are intoxicating. When Meyer's vampire character Edward Cullen describes his need for Bella (and her blood) it is like reading a heroin addict's inner thoughts intertwined with Romeo Montague's all-consuming love for Juliet Capulet.The first day I had the book I read 300 pages. I finished the remaining 198 pages the following day and I now have a hunger for Book 2. I am a little embarrassed by my new-found favorite saga, although the series has sparked a renewed interest in reading in the teen population. In "Harry Potter" fashion, "Twilight" will soon hit the silver screen. Even though the movie version of Meyer's first book won't be in theatres until Nov. 11, the hype is already at full force. The main characters in the film adaptation of "Twilight" have become immediate celebrities, complete with crazed fans.During the recent Video Music Awards, the show's host cut off one of the stars of the upcoming "Twilight" movie while he was introducing an act. The actor's fans immediately began spreading viral hate messages against the VMA host all over the Internet.Crazed "Twilight" fans are not my only concern. I also feel a little bad about liking a novel that has received a feminist backlash. In a Washington Post article UC Davis professor Amy Clarke asked, "Do we really want our daughters reading books about a girl like Bella who is always needing to be saved?"Wow, not only am I reading "trashy" vampire novels now, but by doing so I am setting women's rights back at least a hundred years!Gender biased or not, I'm hooked on "Twilight." I must know the whole story of Edward, Bella and the Washington teenage vampires. So if you see me around town, please do not reveal any Book 2, 3 or 4 spoilers.

Fall movie preview: Home grown films

Having already conquered reality TV this summer, from "American Idol" to "Last Comic Standing," Utahns seem poised this fall to take over movie screens.
Opening this fall are enough movies filmed in Utah or directed by Utah filmmakers to fill a small multiplex. For instance:
» "Everybody Wants to Be Italian," a romantic comedy in the "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" vein, written and directed by former Salt Lake City resident Jason Todd Ipson. Opened Sept. 5.
» The aviation boys' adventure "The Flyboys," filmed in the St. George area, directed by Utah filmmaker Rocco DeVilliers. Opens today.

starring Minnie Driver, written and directed by Charles Oliver, a University of Utah graduate who
ran a commercial film company in Salt Lake City for many years. Opens today.
» The rugby drama "Forever Strong," filmed in Utah County, based on a real-life Utah rugby coach, directed by Brigham Young University grad Ryan Little ("Saints and Soldiers"). Opens Sept. 26.
» The eagerly awaited "High School Musical 3: Senior Year," filmed this summer at Salt Lake City's East High School. Opens Oct. 24.
And, if you want to stretch the point a bit, two more movies represent work from BYU alumni: "Lakeview Terrace," a racially charged suburban thriller starring Samuel L. Jackson and directed by the notorious Neil LaBute (opening Sept. 19); and "Twilight," the movie adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's best-selling vampire novel (opening Nov. 21).
"It shows that we've been making movies in the state, that's for sure, and regularly and consistently," said Marshall Moore, director of the Utah Film Commission. "We've got a deep, rich indigenous film industry going on."
The majority of the films were independently produced, outside of a studio. Moore said the state's incentive program - which offers a 15-percent rebate for production money spent in the state, but capped at $500,000 - particularly benefits movies with budgets between $1 million and $5 million.
Getting such a movie into theaters isn't easy, according to Ryan Little. "The challenge is always, if you make a movie that's independently financed - when you don't have a studio list of marketable names - it's tricky," Little said. "We don't have all the components that a studio wants, and we're too commercial for an independent audience. We kind of live in this weird void."
Little's "Forever Strong" has some somewhat-familiar actors. The star is Gary Cole ("The Brady Bunch," "Office Space") as rugby coach Larry Gelwix - and the cast includes up-and-comers Sean Faris ("Never Back Down") and Penn Badgley ("Gossip Girl"). Even so, Little said, the studios who saw the movie were interested only in a direct-to-video release, not a theatrical run.
And though "Forever Strong" is set in Utah, Arizona and Colorado, all of it was filmed in Utah. "We tried to show the mountains in Utah, and tried not to show the mountains for Arizona," Little said. "We tried to make it feel that you were in three different places."

Fall movies continue to heat up box office long after summer is over.

With the summer's end, Hollywood tends to head into a slow period, releasing films unlikely to garner huge crowds and generate a lot of buzz, but that doesn't mean there won't be any good films until winter.

Beginning Sept. 22 and running through May, Cinemark Tinseltown will run high-definition broadcasts of select plays live from the Metropolitan Opera House in New York.

Tinseltown runs about of these 10 shows per season and they tend to have the most attendance, general manager David Ray said.

"The operas average 100 to 120 people per showing," he said. "It's a great convenience for those who want to see an opera from the Metropolitan without having to travel so far."

After winning several awards for last year's gritty masterpiece, "No Country for Old Men," Joel and Ethan Coen are not afraid of making a goofy comedy to follow their bloody thriller.

The fall movie season begins with the Coen brothers' comedy caper "Burn After Reading," which hits theaters Friday. Brad Pitt and Frances McDormand are two moronic gym employees who stumble across a disk containing top-secret CIA information. Attempting to make profit with the disk, they become CIA targets. The all-star cast also includes George Clooney, Tilda Swinton and John Malkovich.

Reuniting for their fourth film, which comes out Oct. 10, Russell Crowe and director Ridley Scott team up for the political thriller, "Body of Lies."

Leonardo DiCaprio stars as a former-journalist-turned-CIA operative on a mission to locate an al-Qaida leader. Crowe plays the evil leader of the operation, overlooking DiCaprio and causing problems while he is on assignment.

Since 2005, Scott has directed one movie per year. While "Kingdom of Heaven" and "A Good Year" flopped, last year's "American Gangster" was a huge success. "Body of Lies" will hopefully follow the same path.

Halloween is creeping up on us, which means another installment of the "Saw" series. "Saw V" opens Oct. 24 with more innocent victims trying to escape the traps of the sadistic Jigsaw.

Some people are fans of the gruesome slasher series while others can't stomach it. However you look at it, the series has become successful and has reinvented the '80s-style horror franchise, a la "Friday the 13th" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street."

One returning and one new movie franchise headline November.

A new fantasy movie replaces the Nov. 21 slot that "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" originally filled.

"Twilight" follows the story of a young teenage girl who falls in love with a vampire and refuses to leave his side. The book series is aimed at young adults, but popularity through word of mouth has expanded the audience beyond the target demographic.

Senior Megan Farley, a liberal studies major, is excited to see the film.

"The story is just great and everything is so descriptive in the book," she said. "I can't wait to see what they do with the movie."

No matter what your taste is, you are guaranteed to find something entertaining at the movie theater this fall. As the late Gene Siskel used to say, "See you at the movies."

Three of my favorite things in this entire world are movies, baseball (Go Red Sox!) and the “Twilight” universe. So needless to say, I’m really friggin’ excited about the one scene in November’s movie that will combine all three.
This week’s “Twilight” Tuesday focuses on the very cool Peter Facinelli, who plays Dr. Carlisle Cullen. While speaking with him, I got super excited when he revealed an ad lib he put into the baseball scene, revealing Carlisle’s history of hanging out with Babe Ruth — and, much like myself, he cited the superpowered sequence as the moment he’s most eager to see on the big screen.
“Personally, I’m hoping the vampire baseball scene will be really fun to watch,” the actor insisted, saying that all those fastballs and leaping catches should jump off the page and onto the big screen. “I mean, you can only do so much with your imagination, when you’re thinking about vampire baseball [and reading 'Twilight']. But actually seeing that and hearing the cracking of the bat? The super-vampire speed? That should be fun to watch.”
Facinelli admitted that the “Twilight” movie team faced some obstacles condensing Stephenie Meyer’s big fat novel into a 120-page screenplay. “Over 500 pages are in the book, so you can’t fit every single detail in,” he explained. “And some details will be different. Stephenie Meyer is very detail-oriented, to the point where she describes clothes in the scene! So, sometimes it’s not going to be as detailed or as specific as the book. There will be subtle differences, but the essence is there.”
And in moments like the beloved baseball scene, Facinelli promised that the “Twilight” movie will once again take pride in showing vampires in a setting that breaks the Hollywood mold. “I was pleasantly pleased that they stayed away from the stereotypes,” he said of the series. “The fact that we’re not even allowed to show fangs in the movie is huge, because it’s not [expected]. As much as it is a vampire movie, it’s really a love story too.”

'Twilight' Tuesday: Peter Facinelli Reveals On-Set Pranks, Says He's On Team Edward
'I like the idea of immortality, but I don't like the idea of drinking other people's blood,' actor says of vampires.
By Larry CarrollPORTLAND, Oregon — These days, "Twilight" Nation is buzzing about their favorite young movie stars' VMA appearance — and host Russell Brand's controversial interruption of Robert Pattinson.
But here on "Twilight" Tuesday, the Cullens always get the final word. So it is with great pleasure that we turn this week's spotlight on Peter Facinelli, the affable actor who recently revisited the "Twilight" universe to put the finishing touches on his portrayal of the family's patriarch.
In this excusive interview, the actor from such shows as "Six Feet Under" and "Damages" (and real-life loving husband to "90210" star Jennie Garth) revealed the Babe Ruth ad lib that might make it into the movie, his alliance to Team Edward, and the hilarious practical joke he played on co-star Jackson Rathbone.
MTV: First off, give us your take on Carlisle.
Peter Facinelli: Carlisle Cullen is about 348 years old, but he doesn't look a day over 200. He's the father of the Cullen family, which is a small little vampire family in this town of Forks, Washington. He's started this little coven and tries to fit in with the humans instead of living the natural vampire world of feeding on humans. He's a vegetarian with his family, and they feed on animals.
MTV: And he's very philanthropic for a vampire. He's turned a lot of people over the years, but for good reasons.
Facinelli: Yeah, all the people he's ever turned into vampires have been either sick or dying, so I thought I was doing them a favor by giving them the gift of immortality. It's not like he's a bad guy at all.
MTV: Had you read the books before you got the gig?
Facinelli: I read ["Twilight"] right before I met with Catherine Hardwicke. I read the book in one day; I couldn't put it down. It was fantastic.
MTV: You had your own little cram session?
Facinelli: Yeah, they didn't have the script available; they just had some audition pages, and I was like, "I don't know what this is about." So I read the book, and I really enjoyed it.
MTV: Were you into vampires anyway?
Facinelli: Well, here's an interesting story: About four weeks before the audition process, I was reading a book about vampires in Hollywood through all the ages. Like 50 years of vampires! It was in an office. I was flipping through it, and I thought, "Wow!" I was never a big fan of vampire movies, until I flipped through that book and saw how beautiful they were and the mystery of it all. It's turned into a lot of gore and guts nowadays in a lot of vampire movies, [but] when I read "Twilight," it reminded me of the old movies when vampires were mysterious and had sexual undertones, and it was more of a beautiful vampire tale instead of the horror genre, which I liked.
MTV: What's it like playing father to people who are only a few years younger than you?
Facinelli: Oh, you're too kind. I've actually got about a decade on all these kids. And I have kids myself, so it's not hard paying the father role. We've all bonded, and they all call me Dad.
MTV: Have you tried to go off the script a bit and sneak in references to Carlisle's 350-year-long history? Maybe tell a story about the time you were hanging out with Abe Lincoln?
Facinelli: Well, I don't know if it will make it in the movie, but I made reference to a time when I met Babe Ruth during the baseball scene.
MTV: A lot of the actors had to undergo some intense stunt training. Did you?
Facinelli: You know, I didn't have that much wirework. But I had doctor training! I can do operations now. So if you ever need anything ... like a spleen checked or your liver removed, I'm here.
MTV: That will come in handy if my appendicitis acts up! So if the "Twilight" sequels get made, what's the one scene from the other books that you can't wait to shoot?
Facinelli: I would say I'm looking forward to the scene where the werewolves and the vampires team up to fight some bad vampires. That would be a fun sequence to shoot.
MTV: Are you Team Edward, Team Jacob or Team Switzerland?
Facinelli: [Laughs.] Well, I'd have to go Team Edward. But [my character is] so biased. I mean, as a fan of the book, I'm Team Switzerland. But sitting here playing Dr. Carlisle? I have to go Team Edward.
MTV: If there were such a thing as vampires, would you want to be changed?
Facinelli: Wow. I like the idea of immortality, but that is a tough question. Someone asked me what age I'd like to be changed at, and that is a tough one. I kept changing my answer: "18. No, 23. No, 26. No, 30. Ahh." It was like, "Anywhere between 18 and 40, I think." I like the idea of immortality, but I don't like the idea of drinking other people's blood or living off of animal's blood. That's kind of nasty.
MTV: If you were a vampire, would you want to go vegetarian, or would you go old-school?
Facinelli: Again, you're catching me on a day when I'm all in-character, so I have to say vegetarian. The thought of eating someone else's blood is gross to me. But animal blood? Warm animal blood? That's not so great either. I guess I'd have to go with the animal blood.
MTV: Who is the biggest prankster among the "Twilight" stars?
Facinelli: Edi Gathegi [who plays Laurent] was the big jokester. ... He does all these voices, so he would call me [on the phone] and pretend like he was different people. Like, he called my room and said he was some girl named Suzie, and I was like, "Who is this?" This is a funny story: One day I told him to call Jackson Rathbone and do Suzie for him and say he was Suzie from the production office. So he called and said, "Hey, this is Suzie from the production office. We just want to tell you that we're dying your hair back to brown, because we don't like the blond hair."
MTV: That's hilarious, because Jackson was already going through hell trying to find the right hairdo.
Facinelli: Yeah, and this was early in the production. [Jackson] was like, "Oh, OK." And he was actually on the phone with his manager, so he clicked over and was like, "Oh, yeah, they just called me. They're dying my hair back." And his manager goes, "Oh, thank God. I hated you with blond hair!" And then [Edi] called them back and was like, "It's just me." And [Jackson] had to call his manager back to say it's not real. And the manager was totally backpedaling! Jackson said it was funny.

Twilight Scoop! Sequels, Action and Paramore

The movie adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's young-adult vampire novel Twilight won't hit theaters until November, but the stars are already talking sequels.
"I set up my performance to make it satisfying to do at least two more," Robert Pattinson, who stars as Edward in Twilight, told me at yesterday at the VMA's. "I don't know if they're going to make them or not, but I think they probably will."
Taylor Lautner, who costars as Jacob, says they'll know more when box office receipts come in. "Nothing's been confirmed yet," he said. "So we're waiting to see. If it goes well, then maybe."
Pattinson and Lautner didn't even know about the Twilight phenomenon when they first auditioned.
"I hadn't even heard about them," Pattinson says of the now four-book phenomenon. "I was living in England at the time, and they really weren't anything in England then."
They've now read all the books, but Lautner is quick to point out that the movie isn't just for the series' mostly female fan base. "What we tried to do with the film is add a little more action and horror to it," he explains. "So now it's for everyone."
Lautner and Pattinson hit the VMAs with Twilight costars Kristen Stewart and Cam Gigandet (that's Cam above in the middle of Pattinson and Lautner) to introduce a performance by Paramore, the pop-rock band that has a new still-untitled song on the movie's soundtrack
'Twilight' Fans Furious After Russell Brand Cuts Off Robert Pattinson At VMAs

'That's basically a FRICKIN SIN in the fandom,' one Twilighter fumes.

Sunday's Video Music Awards were a high-adrenaline, star-studded affair that took many careers to the next level in front of a viewing audience of millions. Britney Spears, Rihanna, the Jonas Brothers and all the others deserve to take a step forward and pat themselves on the back.
Not so fast, Russell Brand.
While the Internet is already abuzz with debate over whether the British comedian's riffing on promise rings and Republicans was actually funny, one very vocal group has already made up its mind. Following a perceived slight from the "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" co-star, Twilighters are anything but amused.
"The host (who was that?) was really annoying, especially when he cut off Rob!" a furious fan calling herself "Chelsea" posted on the MTV Movies Blog. "He's the star of 'Twilight,' you think he could have said his line without being interrupted."
The controversy kicked off when Brand introduced "Twilight" stars Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Cam Gigandet and Robert Pattinson for their much-hyped appearance. Strolling into an aisle to introduce a performance by Paramore in a re-creation of Hollywood's Whisky a Go Go, the actors each took a turn reciting their lines — but before Pattinson could conclude their moment in the sun, Brand cut off the 22-year-old heartthrob.
"This is a confusing concept," the VMA host rambled as Pattinson could only stand there, politely waiting his turn to speak. "It's bloody confusing, but something exciting is about to happen. Paramore are going to perform from the Whisky ..."
As Brand continued to go off the page, Pattinson tried once again to say his line, but all he could get out was a barely heard, "Please welcome ..." Suddenly, his position of honor (being the "Twilight" star to get the final word) had turned into a perceived embarrassment.
"He insulted all 'Twilight' fans," a Twilighter named Sukiyaki posted on MTV.com. "MTV, I hope you have enough space to house all the hate mails about Russell Brand."
"Be prepared for one helluva letter, Russell," declared Natasha, posting the mailing address for Brand's management and organizing a write-in campaign by the millions of readers who've made Stephenie Meyer's novels bestsellers.
"That's basically a FRICKIN SIN in the fandom," fumed babyvampire29, claiming that she was sharpening her spork in preparation to retaliate. "I mean, CUTTING OFF ROB?! No, MTV. Just no. That wasn't smart. Not at all."
Within minutes of the broadcast, a Facebook group named "Twilight Fans Against Russel [sic] Brand" emerged. Its none-too-subtle profile image features a picture of the 2008 VMA host with a scribbled slash through his face and the words "F--- you!!"
Over on YouTube, users like BillieJoesEntourage, youwish2009 and beloved Twilighter NoMoreMarbles fanned the flames with their own angry videos, the last one titled "VMAs + Twilight = TRAGEDY."
"I'm actually a fan of Russell Brand," a user named Wendy vented on the Movies Blog, one of more than 400 comments posted within 12 hours of the broadcast. "But I wanted to jump through the screen and punch him for interrupting Rob."
"F--- U Russell for interrupting Spunk!" a reader named Nightmare and Dream commented, using a nickname Pattinson earned from one of his "Twilight" Tuesday appearances on MTV. "Rob has an amazing hot voice, and we only heard 1.5 words from him!"
You can bet that next time MTV News interviews Brand or Pattinson, we'll be sure to get the straight story on what exactly went down. But this much is known: Pattinson did have a line to deliver. Part of the fun of any MTV awards show is its live, unpredictable nature, but once the broadcast is turned over to the stars, such spontaneous events don't always play themselves out to everyone's satisfaction.
Nevertheless, this year's VMAs follow a (much more successful) appearance by Pattinson, Stewart and Gigandet at the MTV Movie Awards in June. And in the eyes of some Twilighters, the unprecedented honor of getting their heroes onstage at both shows several months before their movie even comes out is a triumph in itself.
"I don't blame MTV for Brand, cuz let's face it, that guy is off his rocker and they can't control the situation when it's live," explained kelliejo806. "No do-overs."
"Peace to MTV," declared Sukiyaki. "WAR TO BRAND!"
"OK OK OK, these comments are turning out to be very negative," rationalized AL08 on the Movies Blog boards. "Rob seems like the type to want to be in the back & be shy, so it fits that he would walk in the back and not care if he wasn't in front. It was great of Cam to pull him to the front & it sucks he didn't get to read his line but he laughed about it, which I thought was funny."
"Poor Rob! I mean, I'm sure he's fine with not saying his lines, but the fact that Russell made those moments so extremely awkward, made me feel kind of embarrassed for them. It was easy to see that it was not part of the script, so I guess we're all just wanting what could have been (like Robert saying more than 2 words)," sighed peachplumpear, looking forward to her favorite day of the week, which Twilighters can safely assume will never, ever feature Russell Brand. "Let's hope there's an amazing 'Twilight' Tuesday to redeem this."
